Robert Guthrie & Elizabeth Jane Caldwell

The Family Focus is on . . .

ROBERT GUTHRIE & ELIZABETH JANE CALDWELL
~ Pennsylvania & Ohio ~

When an ancestor is found living in the same place at the same time as others of the same surname it is easy to conclude that they are probably related. Sometimes too easy. This seems to have been the case when Rev. Laurence Rawlins Guthrie constructed the hypothetical family of James Guthrie, one of three emigrant brothers from Edinburgh, Scotland, and his wife, reportedly a Miss Bissell. His 1930s viewpoint did not come with the advantages of DNA testing and internet access to databases everywhere. It’s still a pretty good guess. . . even if it’s technically wrong.

Origin Theories:

The tradition surrounding the Three Brothers immigration story has holes that have yet to be filled. A few lineages connected to them appear to have been mixed with wrong branches of the same family. DNA testing has gone a long way to proving relationships, and correcting improper placements within Guthrie Family Group 2A, but there is still work to be done.

In the case of Robert Guthrie, born in 1752, his theoretical placement as the son of James Guthrie & Miss Bissell has a potentially insurmountable problem– a paternal line genetic mismatch that most likely occurred at or before Robert’s generation. While other men who are theorized to belong to Robert’s family have correctly matched Guthrie Family Group 2A, the YDNA results for a direct line male descendant of the Guthrie-Caldwell family do not match GFG2A or any of the Guthrie groups.

A single result like this could be a more recent genetic mismatch caused by a non-paternal event or adoption. We really do need a 2nd direct male descendant of the Guthrie-Caldwell line for confirmation. However, there are multiple autosomal DNA tests sharing matches with this participant all the way back to the Guthrie-Caldwell generation, which suggests that this genetic divergence occurred no later than the time of Robert’s conception.

That leaves us with more than one mystery. Was Robert Guthrie the son of the couple identified as James Guthrie & Miss Bissell? If he did historically belong to that family, or to some family within the group, who then was his biological father? Was he even born in Pennsylvania? Are there any genetic or historical clues that point to his true family origins?

Many of the family lines descending from Robert Guthrie’s male offspring have numerous sons. There has to be more living male Guthrie descendants out there with some Y-DNA that can confirm current results or provide new evidence about your family origins. Step up to the plate, guys. All it takes is a little courage and some spit.

NATHANIEL GUTHRIE
1783PA-p1850

Nathaniel Guthrie was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania on 22 Apr 1783. His marriage to Nancy South reportedly occurred in that location in 1804, but the family had already moved to Ohio by that time. No marriage record found. Her father, Daniel South, died in Allegheny County, PA leaving a will dated 17 Jun 1811 wherein he identified her as Nancy Guthery, bequeathing her the interest on $200, and the principle to her heirs upon her death to be held in trust by her brother Benjamin South. Further details on the family come from the obituary of daughter, Nancy C (Guthrie) Moore, born in Steubenville, Ohio 11 Dec 1823. She was the only daughter among four children. The sons of the family were Joseph and David, steamer pilots on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and Peter, a Methodist Episcopal Minister. The household of Nathaniel Guthrie was enumerated in 1840 in Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio with 1M 50-59, 1F 40-49, and 1F 15-19. Presumably the boys had already moved out by that time. Prior to Nancy’s marriage to William H Moore, she moved with her parents from Ohio to Indiana settling in Jeffersonville. Nathaniel’s DOD has been reported as 1853, presumably in Indiana. His widow survived him. She died sometime after 1860 where she was living in Randolph, Ohio County, Indiana with her daughter Nancy Moore and family.

MARGARET GUTHRIE
1784PA-1850OH

Born in Washington County on 11 December 1784, Pennsylvania, Margaret Guthrie was the second daughter of the household. She married Robert Thomas Finney on 13 March 1806 in Belmont County, Ohio, but they must have returned to Pennsylvania because their children are noted to have been born there. When Robert died in Pennsylvania in 1843, Peggy chose to go back to Ohio. Widowed, she was living in Nottingham, Harrison County, OH with her eldest daughter Maria Finney in 1850. They were living in the household next to her brother David Guthrie and family.

Timeline of Family Events & Historical Highlights:

1752: BIRTH of ROBERT GUTHRIE aka GUTTERY
Reportedly 1752 in Pennsylvania. The ‘presumptive family’ outlined by American Guthrie and Allied Families author, Rev. Lawrence R Guthrie identifies Robert’s probable parents as James Guthrie and Miss Bissell. This couple is also somewhat hypothetical or may be misidentified in the wrong generation of Guthrie Family 2A – Branch I. There is a chance that Robert Guthrie was a member of the extended family of GFG2A, especially because the given name Robert is frequently found among its members, however genetics reveal that he was most likely an adoptee or the result of a Non-Paternal Event (NPE). YDNA testing reveals that the line does not match any other established Guthrie Family Group. See Guthrie DNA Project (below) for more details. There is no definitive document, to my knowledge, identifying his exact date or location of birth. It is believed, based on his potential connections with GFG2A that he was born in Pennsylvania. If he was indeed a son of GFG2A-Branch I’s James Guthrie, his birthplace would most likely be West Call, Chester, Pennsylvania.

1760: BIRTH of ELIZABETH JANE CALDWELL
Various sources list her as Eliza Jane or Jane Elizabeth. According to those same sources, she was born to William H Caldwell (1726PA-1791PA) and Margaret McCune/McEwen in Pennsylvania on 20 Feb 1760.

1773: FORMATION of WESTMORELAND COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
Westmoreland County was formed on 26 Feb 1773 from Lancaster, Northumberland, adn later Bedford Counties. It was the first county in the Colony of Pennsylvania whose entire territorial boundary was located west of the Allegheny Mountains. Westmoreland County originally included the present-day counties of Fayette, Washington, Greene, and parts of Beaver, Allegheny, Indiana, and Armstrong counties. [Wikipedia]

1778: MARRIAGE OF ROBERT GUTHRIE & ELIZABETH JANE CALDWELL
Pennsylvania, USA on 4 May 1778

No original record found. Documented in the US and International Marriage Records Database (Ancestry) and on various Family Trees, the date is listed in American Guthrie and Allied Families. Much of the author’s information came through direct correspondence with descendants.

1778-1783: PENNSYLVANIA RANGER
Robert Guttery is listed as serving in Gideon Long’s company of Pennsylvania rangers for the Continental Line during the American Revolution. [Fold3]

1780: BIRTH of SON – WILLIAM GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA on 8 Aug 1780

William’s DOB is listed in trees as the 8th of August, but his tombstone lists him as 74 years 2m 23 d at his death on 2 Nov 1854. That would makes his DOB the 10th instead.

1781: FORMATION of CUMBERLAND TOWNSHIP
Pennsylvania on 15 Jul 1781

Washington County, Pennsylvania was formed from part of Westmoreland County on 28 March 1791. Greene County, Pennsylvania was established on 9 Febrary 1796 when Washington County was divided into 2 segments by an act of the Legislature. The southern portion became Greene county and consisted of 577 square miles, which also encompassed Cumberland Township.

Cumberland Township, formerly Washington now in Greene County, Pennsylvania

1781: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA on 4 August 1781

Elizabeth’s birth is documented in trees as being in Cumberland Township. Her birth year of 1781 is the same year that town was officially established. At that time the township was a part of Westmoreland County, which became Washington County in 1791, and later Greene County in 1796.

1783: BIRTH of SON – NATHANIEL GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA on 22 April 1783

At the time of Nathaniel’s birth Cumberland Township was a part of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The county divided in 1791 to form Washington County.

1784: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARGARET ‘PEGGY’ GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA

Reportedly born in Cumberland Township on 11 December 1784, Peggy would have been born in Westmoreland County. It was not until 1791 that Washington County formed from Westmoreland.

1785: BIRTH of SON – ROBERT CALDWELL GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA on 10 Oct 1785

This birth would have occurred in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania since Washington County did not officially form from that location until 1791.

1787: RESIDENCE in PENNSYLVANIA
Pennsylvania, USA

This is a possible match for this Robert Guthrie. A ‘Roats Guttery’ is listed as living next to William Caldwell on Buffalo Creek. William’s wife was named Elizabeth as was a daughter named in his will.

This entry is documented for Washington County, PA. Technically, the area was still Westmoreland County until 1791.

There is another Robert Guthrie living in Washington County, Pennsylvania, but he likely arrived in America about 1800 and settled in Peters Township. See GFG12 – Robert Guthrie and Jean McGibney. This 1787 entry is probably too early to conflict with that family line.

1788: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – JANE GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA on 11 April 1788

If Jane was born in Cumberland Township, the location would have been in Westmoreland County since Washington County was not formed until 1791.

1789: BIRTH of SON – SAMUEL GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA on 11 Dec 1789

Washington County was not formed from Westmoreland County until 1791. If he was born in Cumberland Township, the location would have been Westmoreland County.

1790: BIRTH of SON – JOHN ALLEN GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA on 8 November 1790

Washington County did not form from Westmoreland County until 1791, so John Allen Guthrie’s birth was most likely officially in the parent county of Westmoreland.

1791: FORMATION of WASHINGTON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania on 28 Mar 1791

1792: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARY ‘POLLY’ GUTHRIE
Washington County, Pennsyulvania, USA on 22 June 1792

Polly is the first of the children officially born in Washington County even though their actual residence did not change.

1794: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – AGNES ‘NANCY’ F. GUTHRIE
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA on 4 March 1794

1796: BIRTH of SON – DAVID GUTHRIE
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA on 6 Aug 1796

1797: RESIDENCE / PROPERTY PURCHASE
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA on 10 November 1797

Heirs of William Caldwell of Buffalo Creek, Washington, Pennsylvania sold 64 acres to Robert Guthrie.

1797: JEFFERSON COUNTY, OHIO FORMATION
Six years before Ohio was granted statehood, Jefferson County was formed July 29, 1797 as declared by General Arthur St. Claire, Governor of the Northwest Territory. A fort was built in 1789 along the shore of the Ohio River in the area of Steubenville, called “Fort Steuben”, for the protection of the surveyors who surveyed the public land. [SOURCE]

1797-1800: REMOVED to HARRISON COUNTY, OHIO
Robert Guthrie and family are said to have settled in Harrison County, Ohio about eight miles south of Cadiz. The county was not officially formed until 1813 from parts of Jefferson (1797) and Tuscarawas (1808) Counties. This will account for some of the other records for this family found in those locations.

1798: BIRTH of SON – JAMES CALDWELL GUTHRIE
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA on 27 January 1798

1800: 1st MARRIAGE of SON – WILLIAM GUTHRIE to ELEANOR EVANS
Pennsylvania or Ohio about 1800

William and Eleanor were parents to 12 children: Samuel (1801), Robert David (1802), John Evans (1806), William Patterson (1807), Jane C (1809), Francis E (1810), Elizabeth (1813), Nathaniel South (1816), Mary (1818), James (1820), Sarah (1821), and Lydia (1824).

1800: BIRTH of SON – JOSEPH GUTHRIE
Deersville, Harrison, Ohio, USA on 4 March 1800

1802: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SARAH ‘SALLY’ GUTHRIE
Harrison County, Ohio, USA on 27 July 1802

1803: TOWN of CADIZ ESTABLISHED
Harrison County, Ohio, USA

The town of Cadiz was established at the juncture of two major roads, one from Pittsburgh and one from Washington, Pennsylvania.

1804: MARRIAGE of SON – NATHANIEL GUTHRIE to NANCY SOUTH
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA about 1804

This is an estimated DOM and likely location. Nathaniel and Nancy moved to Ohio settling in what would become Harrison County. They had three children: Peter (1806), Nancy (1808), and Samuel (1809). Both Nathaniel and Nancy were living at the time of the 1850 census, which identifies Nathaniel as a farmer.

1804: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARTHA GUTHRIE
Harrison County, Ohio, USA on 4 May 1804

1806: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – MARGARET GUTHRIE to ROBERT THOMAS FINNEY
Pennsylvania, USA on 11 December 1784

Based on the date, this marriage would have taken place in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The county did not become Washington County until 1791. Peggy and Robert settled in Nottingham, Harrison County, Ohio. They had 10 children: Maria (1809), Joseph (1810), Jane C (1812), Robert Potts (1814), David A (1815), William Guthrie (1818), Thomas D (1820), Sarah K (1822), James (1825), and John (1831). Husband Robert died in 1843. Peggy died 7 years later in March of 1850.

1806: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH GUTHRIE to ADAM FIGLEY
Jefferson County, Ohio, USA on 8 December 1806

Elizabeth Guthrie and her husband Adam Figley lived in Nottingham and Moorefield townships in Harrison County, Ohio. They were parents to 8 children: Jane (1807), Jacob (1810), Delila (1814), Robert (1814), Rebecca (1816), Joseph (1818), Elizabeth (1821), and Ellinor (18??). Adam Figley was a farmer. Elizabeth died in 1833 survived by her husband who died 9 Mar 1850.

1808: FORMATION of TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, OHIO
Tuscarawas County was formed from Muskingum, Feb. 15, 1808. The name is that of an Indian tribe, and in one of their dialects signifies “open mouth.” This is a fertile, well-cultivated county, partly level and partly rolling and hilly.  Built in 1778, Fort Laurens was the only military fort built in the state of Ohio during the Revolutionary War, was located on the west bank on the Tuscarawas River near the town of Bolivar.

1808: BIRTH of SON – JOSIAH GUTHRIE
Deersville, Harrison, Ohio, USA on 27 August 1808

1809: MARRIAGE of SON – ROBERT CALDWELL GUTHRIE to JANE CUNNINGHAM
Pennsylvania or Ohio, USA on 15 Feb 1809

Robert Caldwell Guthrie married Jane Cunningham on 15 Feb 1809. I have Pennsylvania listed, but the family was already in Ohio by this date, so it may have occurred there. Robert served in the War of 1812. He and Jane were parents to 16 children: Lydia G (1810), David (1812), Margaret (1814), Sarah (1815), Benjamin C (1817), William (1819), Mary (1820), Robert Cunningham (1822), Nathaniel Thomas (1825), Rebecca A (1827), Julia Ann (1828), Martha L (1830), Isabel (1835), Elizabeth A (1836), Sophia M (1837), and an unidentified infant. Robert died on 18 Feb 1854.

1811: MARRIAGE of SON – SAMUEL GUTHRIE to ELIZABETH SHAW
Ohio, USA about 1811

This is an estimated DOM based on the earliest known birth date of one of their children in 1812. 1. Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android This is one of my Guthrie lines. How can I assist with identifying who to approach for DNA testing? (This is a maternal line. My second line, paternal, has begun/ended with Alexander Wilson Guthrie, likely born in Pa., about 1820. I find him listed in an Ohio medical college just prior to 1850. He next appears in the 1850 census in German Twp., Harrison, Ohio.My father, his grandson, is still alive.

    • As you can imagine, it is often difficult to track down living individuals when privacy is important most of us, especially if we’re planning to ask for some DNA. I suggest that you start with people and families who are already interested in genealogy. Check Ancestry or other locations where trees are posted to see who also descends from Robert Guthrie. We need a male Guthrie for Y-DNA testing. Maybe they’ll be in a better position to know a relative who might be interested in testing. The second method is to meticulously track every line of descent possible using any post-1940 census record available to identify a male Guthrie to contact by phone or email. This always feels a bit stalkery, but you might get lucky. — Ann
