ROBERT GUTHRIE & ELIZABETH JANE CALDWELL

When an ancestor is found living in the same place at the same time as others of the same surname it is easy to conclude that they are probably related. Sometimes too easy. This seems to have been the case when Rev. Laurence Rawlins Guthrie constructed the hypothetical family of James Guthrie, one of three emigrant brothers from Edinburgh, Scotland, and his wife, reportedly a Miss Bissell. His 1930s viewpoint did not come with the advantages of DNA testing and internet access to databases everywhere. It’s still a pretty good guess. . . even if it’s technically wrong.

Origin Theories:

The tradition surrounding the Three Brothers immigration story has holes that have yet to be filled. A few lineages connected to them appear to have been mixed with wrong branches of the same family. DNA testing has gone a long way to proving relationships, and correcting improper placements within Guthrie Family Group 2A, but there is still work to be done.

In the case of Robert Guthrie, born in 1752, his theoretical placement as the son of James Guthrie & Miss Bissell has a potentially insurmountable problem– a paternal line genetic mismatch that most likely occurred at or before Robert’s generation. While other men who are theorized to belong to Robert’s family have correctly matched Guthrie Family Group 2A, the YDNA results for a direct line male descendant of the Guthrie-Caldwell family do not match GFG2A or any of the Guthrie groups.

A single result like this could be a more recent genetic mismatch caused by a non-paternal event or adoption. We really do need a 2nd direct male descendant of the Guthrie-Caldwell line for confirmation. However, there are multiple autosomal DNA tests sharing matches with this participant all the way back to the Guthrie-Caldwell generation, which suggests that this genetic divergence occurred no later than the time of Robert’s conception.

That leaves us with more than one mystery. Was Robert Guthrie the son of the couple identified as James Guthrie & Miss Bissell? If he did historically belong to that family, or to some family within the group, who then was his biological father? Was he even born in Pennsylvania? Are there any genetic or historical clues that point to his true family origins?

Many of the family lines descending from Robert Guthrie’s male offspring have numerous sons. There has to be more living male Guthrie descendants out there with some Y-DNA that can confirm current results or provide new evidence about your family origins. Step up to the plate, guys. All it takes is a little courage and some spit.

William died 2 Nov 1854 in Richland, Ohio and is buried at Rome Presbyterian Church Revolutionary War Cemetery. He was 74 at his death.

Birth in Pennsylvania, Elizabeth moved with her parents to Ohio. She married Adam Figley in Jefferson County, Ohio on 8 Dec 1806. Elizabeth died in 1833 in Harrison County, Ohio. Adam survived her by 17 years.

NATHANIEL GUTHRIE

Nathaniel Guthrie was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania on 22 Apr 1783. His marriage to Nancy South reportedly occurred in that location in 1804, but the family had already moved to Ohio by that time. No marriage record found. Her father, Daniel South, died in Allegheny County, PA leaving a will dated 17 Jun 1811 wherein he identified her as Nancy Guthery, bequeathing her the interest on $200, and the principle to her heirs upon her death to be held in trust by her brother Benjamin South. Further details on the family come from the obituary of daughter, Nancy C (Guthrie) Moore, born in Steubenville, Ohio 11 Dec 1823. She was the only daughter among four children. The sons of the family were Joseph and David, steamer pilots on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and Peter, a Methodist Episcopal Minister. The household of Nathaniel Guthrie was enumerated in 1840 in Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio with 1M 50-59, 1F 40-49, and 1F 15-19. Presumably the boys had already moved out by that time. Prior to Nancy’s marriage to William H Moore, she moved with her parents from Ohio to Indiana settling in Jeffersonville. Nathaniel’s DOD has been reported as 1853, presumably in Indiana. His widow survived him. She died sometime after 1860 where she was living in Randolph, Ohio County, Indiana with her daughter Nancy Moore and family.

Born in Washington County on 11 December 1784, Pennsylvania, Margaret Guthrie was the second daughter of the household. She married Robert Thomas Finney on 13 March 1806 in Belmont County, Ohio, but they must have returned to Pennsylvania because their children are noted to have been born there. When Robert died in Pennsylvania in 1843, Peggy chose to go back to Ohio. Widowed, she was living in Nottingham, Harrison County, OH with her eldest daughter Maria Finney in 1850. They were living in the household next to her brother David Guthrie and family.

Robert was born in Pennsylvania on 10 Oct 1785 and he married Jane Cunningham there on 15 Feb 1809. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. Robert and his family were enumerated in the Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio census of 1820. As seems to be the case with this Guthrie line, they had a large family. Robert Caldwell Guthrie wrote a will on 4 Aug 1852 mentioning his wife Jane and children. He died in Deersville, Harrison, OH on 18 Feb 1854.

We don’t know much about Jane Guthrie (at least I don’t). She was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania on 11 April 1788. She may also be known as Jane Rebecca Ann Guthrie, although I don’t seem to have a source for that data. Her marriage to John Cook occurred on 25 Feb 1817.

Samuel’s birth occurred in Washington County, Pennsylvania on 11 Dec 1789. He was presumably married to Elizabeth Shaw sometime before 1812, the year of their eldest son’s birth. The family was listed in the 1820 Census of Cadiz, Harrison, Ohio. Elizabeth’s father, Gavin Shaw, wrote a will on 8 Oct 1827 naming Samuel Guthrie as his son in law. The will was proved 21 Nov 1834. Samuel and his family continued to live in New Athens, Harrison, Ohio. He wrote his own will on 16 Sep 1851 naming his wife Elizabeth and daughter Jane. Samuel died on 17 Sep 1851 and is buried Crabapple Cemetery in Belmont, Ohio, which is 2 miles south of New Athens. Elizabeth lived until 1868.

John Allen Guthrie was born on 8 November 1790 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Cunningham on 5 Oct 1815. Their first four children were all girls, so they may have wondered if they were ever going to produce a son. Their last three were all boys. John and Margaret lived in Perry, Tuscawaras, Ohio. She predeceased him in 1858. John died on 5 December 1869 and is buried in Pleasant Grove, Tuscarawas, Ohio.

I don’t have a DOD for Edmund, but it was likely about that time as there were no other children. Nancy remarried on 20 Feb 1822 to John Morrow Kirkpatrick. They lived in Harrison and later in Pike, Knox, Ohio where they raised their children. John died in 1864 and Nancy on 14 May 1877. They are buried at Four Corners Cemetery in Knox County.

A Christmas bride, she married William K Kirkpatrick on 25 Dec 1823 in Athens, Harrison, Ohio. They lived in Moorefield, Harrison, Ohio. Sarah died at the age of 82 on 14 Jan 1885. Her husband William survived her by 3 years. He died 1 May 1888 at the age of 86. They are buried at Nottingham Cemetery in Harrison County, Ohio.

The youngest of the bunch, Josiah Guthrie was born on 27 August 1808 in Deersville, Harrison, Ohio. He married Rachel Myers in Tuscarawas on 6 May 1830 when he was 21. Their family was listed in Tuscarawas in 1830, and in Harrison in 1840. Josiah was a farmer. He and Rachel were parents to 7 children. He died at only 49 years of age on 18 Jan 1858. After his death Rachel lived with her unmarried children in New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas in 1870, and later with her daughter Martha Jane (Guthrie) Wardell and family. Rachel died in 1881.

Reportedly 1752 in Pennsylvania. The ‘presumptive family’ outlined by American Guthrie and Allied Families author, Rev. Lawrence R Guthrie identifies Robert’s probable parents as James Guthrie and Miss Bissell. This couple is also somewhat hypothetical or may be misidentified in the wrong generation of Guthrie Family 2A – Branch I. There is a chance that Robert Guthrie was a member of the extended family of GFG2A, especially because the given name Robert is frequently found among its members, however genetics reveal that he was most likely an adoptee or the result of a Non-Paternal Event (NPE). YDNA testing reveals that the line does not match any other established Guthrie Family Group. See Guthrie DNA Project (below) for more details. There is no definitive document, to my knowledge, identifying his exact date or location of birth. It is believed, based on his potential connections with GFG2A that he was born in Pennsylvania. If he was indeed a son of GFG2A-Branch I’s James Guthrie, his birthplace would most likely be West Call, Chester, Pennsylvania.

Greene County, Pennsylvania was established on 9 Febrary 1796 when Washington County was divided into 2 segments by an act of the Legislature. This entry is documented for Washington County, PA. Technically, the area was still Westmoreland County until 1791.

There is another Robert Guthrie living in Washington County, Pennsylvania, but he likely arrived in America about 1800 and settled in Peters Township. See GFG12 – Robert Guthrie and Jean McGibney. This 1787 entry is probably too early to conflict with that family line.

Tuscarawas County was formed from Muskingum, Feb. 15, 1808. The name is that of an Indian tribe, and in one of their dialects signifies “open mouth.” This is a fertile, well-cultivated county, partly level and partly rolling and hilly.  Built in 1778, Fort Laurens was the only military fort built in the state of Ohio during the Revolutionary War, was located on the west bank on the Tuscarawas River near the town of Bolivar.

Robert died on 18 Feb 1854.

Likely married before 1820 when their household was listed in the Cadiz, Harrison, Ohio census. Samuel and Elizabeth were parents to 8 children: Guian S (1812), Eleanor (1817), Infant Son (1824), Robert (1826), Jane B J (1833), Eliza (18??), Sarah (18??) and Mary (18??). Samuel died in New Athens, Harrison, OH on 17 Sep 1851. Elizabeth survived him by 17 years.

In the name of God Amen; I ROBERT GUTTERY of Cadiz Township in the County of Harrison and State of Ohio am weak of Body, tho of Perfect mind and Memory and calling to mind the Mortality of Nature and knowing that it is appointed for all men one to Die, I do ordain, constitute, and ___ this my last Will and Testament, and principally and first of all, I recommend my soul to God that gave it and my body to the Earth to be Buried in a Christian decent manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named, and as to my worldly affairs which it hath pleased God to bless me with, after my Just Debts and funeral charges is paid I leave to be divided in the following manner, Viz. I Will the third of all I possess to my beloved WIFE except fifty acres of land to my son ROBERT GUTTERY on the West side of said quarter where I now hold it being the Nor-West quarter section thirty fifth Township ninth Range five, until her Death and then to be divided amongst my Children, and further I leave to my sons NATHANIEL and JOHN thirty dollars, a __ to be paid when my Youngest son JOSIAH becomes of age or if in ease of his Death the next youngest son after him, likewise SAMUEL the same as NATHANIEL & JOHN, also WILLIAM and ROBERT five dollars to be paid at the same time, also I leave to my four youngest sons, DAVID, JAMES, JOSEPH, and JONAH, and equal share except JOSIAH fifty dollars more than the rest, also I leave to my four Daughters namely JANE, NANCY, SALLY & MARTHA twenty dollars a piece, also my Daughters which is married namely ELIZABETH, PEGGY, and POLLY, one dollar a piece to be paid when my son JOSIAH becomes of age; I do constitute and appoint my Beloved sons WILLIAM and ROBERT GUTTERY executors to sell all my moveable Property at my death. The Land is not to be sold before my youngest son JOSIAH becomes of age and then to be equally divided amongst my found youngest sons namely DAVID, JAMES, JOSEPH, and JOSIAH, and further it is my Will that the money of all my moveable property should be put out on Interest until the sale of my Land except the thirds I will to my beloved wife JANE. Later in the year of his father’s death, John Allen Guthrie began a new era of his life through his marriage to Margaret Cunningham. They lived in Perry, Tuscarawas, Ohio raising 4 daughters and 3 sons: Lettie Ann (1816), Jane (1819), Lydia (1821), Nancy (1824), Robert (1827), Benjamin Cunningham (1832), and James Caldwell (1836). He was a farmer. Margaret died in 1858 with John surviving her by another 11 years. He passed away on 5 December 1869 in Pleasant Grove, Tuscarawas, Ohio.

David and Mary Ann were parents to Jane (1821), Ann (1823), Elizabeth (1825), Samuel (1826), Hugh Wylie (1827), and Sarah (1831). Mary Ann died two years later in 1833. David remarried about 1835 to Sally Parrish.

At some point they moved to Pleasant Lake, Steuben, Indiana where Martha died at the age of 32 on 16 December 1836. James remarried about 1837 to Sarah Reynolds with whom he had 7 more children: Caroline (1838), David (18??), Albert William (18??), Isabel (18??), Nancy S (18??), Hugh Dennis (18??), and James Hutchinson (1855). James Long reportedly died in Ohio on 27 July 1857. His widow Sarah survived him and died in 1899.

They settled in Moorefield, Harrison, Ohio to raise their 11 children: James (1824), Robert G (1826), Joseph C (1828), Hugh Lawrence (1829), Mary Jane (1831), Adeline (1833), Sarah (1835), Elizabeth (1837), John (1839), Nancy M (1841), and Margaret (1844). Sarah died in Moorefield at the age of 82 on 14 January 1855. William died three years later.

Josiah Guthrie, the youngest son of the family, married Rachel Myers in 1830. They lived initially in Tuscarawas County, where they were listed in the 1830 census, and by 1840 were in Harrison County, Ohio living in the town of Franklin. They had 7 children: Michael M (1833), Joseph Huffman (1834), Martha Jane (1836), David B (1838), Elizabeth Ann (1841), John W (1844), and George Washington (1847). Josiah was a farmer. He died at only 49 years of age on 18 January 1858. His widow Rachel lived until 1881.

David Guthrie, a widower, remarried within 2 years of his wife Mary Ann Kirkpatrick’s death. They had 6 children. His new wife was Sarah ‘Sally’ Parish with whom he had another 10 children: William (1837), David (1839), Francis Marion (1840), Rachel M (1843), James G (1845), John N (1847), Elijah ‘Elza’ (1849), Nancy (1851), Mary E (1853), and Nathan (1861). David was a farmer. He died on 22 July 1870 and is buried at Four Corners Cemetery. Sally died in 1890.

According to her tombstone, which lists either the 19th or 29th of July 1839, Eleanor was 59 years 9 months 22 days old at her death. That would make her DOB either 27 Sep 1779 or 7 Oct 1779. Online trees sometimes list her DOB as 1784.

William Guthrie died at the age of 74 years 2 months and 23 days. He is buried at the Rome Presbyterian Church Revolutionary War Cemetery. His wife Elizabeth survived him. She died in 1873.
