Massachusetts Patriots
The first protests against British rule in the American colonies happened in Massachusetts. Under the bows of a great elm now known as the Liberty Tree like-minded men gathered to discuss the unjust measures stifling colonial rights. When the Crown imposed the Stamp Act in 1765, the Sons of Liberty argued against taxation without representation. Resistance began with assemblies, petitions, and propaganda, but acts of physical violence or defiance accompanied simple protests and civil disobedience, such as the Boston Tea Party on 16 December 1773.
Afterward, the king ordered the Port of Boston closed, revoked the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s Charter, and even outlawed town meetings. These “Intolerable Acts” stirred revolutionary fervor amongst the colonials as they drafted and signed a pledge against the importation or purchase of British goods. This Non-Importation Act now dubbed The Covenant was sent out to towns across the colony. Any who signed it risked retribution.

On 14 July 1774, James Guthrie of Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts, and his eldest son, Samuel Guthrie, signed the town’s Covenant, a document considered a precursor to the Declaration of Independence. James and four of his sons were Massachusetts soldiers supporting the colonials during the American Revolution.
Massachusetts residents experienced the first battles of the Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord, and at the Siege of Boston on 19 April 1775. The colony contributed the most soldiers to the Continental Army and participated in nearly every major northern battle. There were only a few Guthries living in colonial Massachusetts at the time of the Revolutionary War, and several of those featured here came from the same family.

FIGHTING MEN OF THE COLONIAL ARMY
Militia Units were already established in each colony by the British government after the French & Indian War to help with the expense of maintaining regular soldiers. These units consisted of all males fit for duty between the ages of 16 and 45. They were required to serve in their local militia and maintain the arms and equipment necessary for service. During the American Revolution the Loyalist and Patriot militia men supplemented the British and Continental Army units.
The Continental Army was established by the Second Continental Congress after the outbreak of hostilities at Lexington and Concord and predates George Washington’s assumption of command outside of Boston in July 1775. Most men who served in the Continental Army were between the ages of 15 and 30. Those who served in the Army were merchants, mechanics, and farmers. By 1780, close to 30,000 men served in the Continental Army, which was dispersed throughout the new nation.
“The Fighting Man of the Colonial Army: Daily Life of a Soldier” Rev. War Article, American Battlefield Trust
Men in the Continental Army initially signed up for 1 year of service. After 1778, the length of duty was extended to 3 years or the duration of the war. These periods are documented in the records. Those who served in the local militia were called into service for shorter periods of time, which is also reflected in the records. This often shows one man with multiple enlistments and discharges as their terms of service ended.

MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIERS & SAILORS
of the GUTHRIE SURNAME
In some cases, it is difficult to determine whether one individual enlisted multiple times or if multiple people with the same name are represented in the records. The CARD system was used by the military archivists to document data found in individual Muster and Pay Rolls, Soldiers Orders, Pension Statements, and Misc. Records. They include the Volume and Page number/s where the data was found in the Massachusetts Archives. Original images of the cards are found in the Massachusetts, Revolutionary War, Index Cards to Muster Rolls, 1775-1783, a searchable collection at Family Search).
ADAM GUTHRIE
Adam Guthrie who served in the Continental Army with Massachusetts has not yet been identified as belonging to a specific Guthrie Family Group. Adam Guthrie was about 53 years old at the beginning of the war in 1775. There is no notation as to his birth location. He is listed in the records as “transient” soldier rather than having a home base in Boston or one of the other towns. The records below appear to track Adam from one location to the next before he was wounded and retired to Waltham. A newspaper posting announced his death there in 1793.

Identity Speculation:
1) Adam Guthrie could have been a recent immigrant to the Port of Boston from Scotland or Ireland rather than a man who’s family was already established in the colonies.
2) GFG6 – Adam Guthrie, son of William Guthrie who died 1775 in DE. William listed his son Adam in his 1775 will, so he was alive at the time.
3) Same birth year: Adam Guthrie / Guttry (Wright) born 1 April 1722 Monkton and Prestwick, Ayrshire. However, there is no confirmed immigration record, and he had a large family in Scotland. Doubtful that he would be a transient soldier.

BENJAMIN GUTHRIE
The most likely candidate to be this Benjamin Guthrie is the son of James and Abigail (Betts) Guthrie Sr, whose family includes other Massachusetts Patriot Soldiers. Benjamin was born on 11 July 1763, which would make him 16 years old in October of 1779. This was the entry age required to serve in the local colonial militias, and eligible for service in the Continental Army.

JAMES GUTHRIE
Due to the longstanding misidentification of James Guthrie & Abigail Betts’ son James Guthrie Jr as the Connecticut Patriot Soldier who married Mehitable Hickox (Read: Mistaken Identities CT/MA: Guthrie-Hickox), the military service records for the man (or men) by the name James Guthrie who served in Massachusetts have always been attributed to the father, James Guthrie, Sr. With the understanding that James Sr signed the Lenox Covenant of 1774 and reportedly contributed to other such documents containing revolutionary ideals, it certainly seems highly likely that he would choose to take up arms if he was physically capable. He would have been 43 in 1775, just a few months younger than George Washington himself, and still within the age range required to take part in the Massachusetts Militia.
There were six sons in this family: Samuel (b.1756), James Jr (b.1757), Joseph (b.1761), Benjamin (b.1763), John (b. abt. 1766), and Nathan (b. 1767). Now that James Jr has been correctly identified, there is no reason to suspect that he was not also a Patriot Soldier along with older brother Samuel and younger brothers Joseph & Benjamin. It is possible that these documents represent service by both James Guthrie Sr and James Guthrie Jr.
The majority of the entries are for the Berkshire County, Militia in a fairly straightforward line of service/discharge.
Dec 16 1776 – Mar 21 1777 > July 8 – 21 1777 > July 22 – Aug 13 1777 > Sept 21 – Oct 14 1777 > Oct 14 – 17 1780 > Oct 18 – 21 1780. Then in 1780 the name James Guthrie is listed for Col Vose’s Regt. for 3 months pay, but the card notes that the entry could be meant for Joseph Guthrie who consistently served in that regiment.
There are no overlapping time periods in the above line of service. Without further evidence, it is impossible to determine whether these entries belong to one man or two, and whether that man is likely to be James Guthrie Sr or Jr. We need more clues!

Phillip is not a common name for Colonial Guthries. There is one person with the name listed in American Guthrie and Allied Families. See p. 77 under Patrick of Maryland – The Second Decade. Phillip Guthrie is listed as the 6th child of Patrick Guthrie and Angelica (possibly Selby). Patrick died in Feb 1759, so the children were born prior to that year. No further data.

I wonder if any of those Massachusetts Guthries were descended from any of the original Mayflower passengers from 1620. If it’s not already known, how would I start to research this issue?

The majority of the MA soldiers were from the same family descending from John Guthrie and Abigail Coe of Connecticut. Not a Mayflower Family. at least not on the Guthrie side. I’m not sure if there are other familial connections in later generations to ancestors who descended from Mayflower passengers.
