JAMES GUTHRIE 1732CT – 1804NY and ABIGAIL BETTS
of Fairfield & Litchfield, Connecticut and Chenango, New York

JAMES GUTHRIE
Parents: John Guthrie 1700CT – 1756CT and Abigail Coe 1702CT – 1747CT
Birth: 5 April 1732
Birth Location: Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut
Occupation: Unknown
Marriage: 17 July 1755 at Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut
Military Service: Revolutionary War Soldier (Lenox, MA)
Death: 22 April 1804
Death Location: Sherburne, Chenango, New York, USA
Burial Location: Sherburne West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, Chenango, New York, USA
Notes:
Born in Connecticut, James joined the First Congregational Church of Woodbury in 1752 and married Abigail Betts. Their children were born in Connecticut. He inherited land in Judea from his father. In 1771, the family moved to Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts where they joined the First Congregational Church. James involved himself in the local government and committees. He drew up documents including one known as ‘The Covenant‘ directing representatives of the town assembly to support the Continental Congress in any decision made to declare independence from Great Britain. James and two of his sons, Samuel and Joseph, served in the Revolutionary War as patriot soldiers. In 1792, after selling the last of his Massachusetts property, James and family removed to Bainbridge (formerly Jericho), New York, and quickly settled in Sherburne. The Meeting House on West Hill was the first church building to be erected in Sherburne. The society was formed in the home of James Guthrie, Tuesday, 25 November 1800. James Guthrie died in Sherburne on 22 April 1804, and his widow Abigail in 1814.

Death: 1814
Death Location: Sherburne, Chenango, New York, USA
Burial Location: Unknown, No Marked Grave in Sherburne West Hill Cemetery listed at Find-a-Grave
Notes:
Online trees list Abigail as the daughter of Elias Betts and Abigail Birchard, whose daughter was born on 7 Feb 1746 and baptized 23 Mar 1746 in Wilton, Connecticut. The same source, Church Record Abstracts, indicates that their daughter died on 21 Oct 1783. This information is incongruous with what has been presented in Records of the Guthrie Family (Dunn & Dunn) and American Guthrie & Allied Families (LRG) in relation to the Abigail Betts who married James Guthrie. The latter author basically quotes the earlier work of Dunn & Dunn. I have not found any original source info to prove Abigail’s DOB or DOD. The 1800 census of Sherburne lists the household of “James Guthery” with 1 male and 1 female 45 and over, and 1 female 10-15, which infers that Abigail was still alive at that time.

CHILDREN: 9

SAMUEL GUTHRIE
1756CT – 1808MA

Samuel Guthrie, the eldest of James and Abigail’s children, was born in Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut on 23 May 1756. He was about 15 years old when his parents moved to Lenox, Massachusetts. He enlisted as a patriot soldier in the Revolutionary War serving along with his father and brother, Joseph. After the close of the war he studied medicine and attained fame as a physician and surgeon. Dr Guthrie was twice married. First marriage occurred before 1782 to Sarah MNU by whom he had 2 sons. Presumably, Sarah died prior to 1789 when the second marriage occurred on 9 August 1789 in Stafford, Connecticut to widow Mrs Anna (Bicknell) Wickmal. They also had two sons.

JAMES GUTHRIE
1757CT – 18??

The Barbour Collection lists James Guthrie, the son of James Guthrie and Abigail Betts’ DOB as 19 November 1757. A baptismal date of 5 March 1758 is also given. According to our standard publications, “Records of the Guthrie Family”, “American Guthrie”, etc. James Guthrie married Mehitable Hickox, served in the Revolution, and may have moved his family to Ohio. Family researcher Laura (Guthrie) Bishop questions that the James Guthrie who married Mehitable Hickox is the same man. See Message Boards at Family Search and Ancestry to join in the discussion.

The son of James Guthrie and Abigail Betts would have been about 14 years old when his family moved from Connecticut to Lenox, Massachusetts. His parents remained there until 1792, which means they were residing there during the course of the Revolutionary War. His father and eldest brother Samuel Guthrie reportedly were soldiers, but no record found at Fold3. His brother Joseph (S46383) was a sergeant in Capt. Green’s Company in the First Regiment of the Massachusetts Line. Would James, who was also presumably living with his family in Massachusetts enlist with the army in Danbury, Connecticut instead?

The father sold his Massachusetts property and moved the remainder of his family to New York settling in Sherburne, Chenango County prior to the 1800 census. The following households are listed for that year: James Gothery, James Guthrie Jr, John Guthrey, Joseph Guthrey, and Benjamin Guthery. Presumably, these would be James and Abigail’s household and those of four sons. James Guthrie Jr’s household includes a larger number of children than the 4 children identified as belonging to James Guthrie and Mehitable Hickox.
1800 Census:
1 male and 1 female 26 – 44
1 male 16 – 25
2 males 10 – 15
2 males and 3 females under 10.

See the Rev, War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application File W25667 for other records. Note the birth location of the James Guthrie in the pension records is Pound Ridge, Westchester County, New York. The town was first permanently settled in 1718, and officially incorporated in 1788. He enlisted in Connecticut in 1777. He married Mehitable Hickox in 1783 in Connecticut. According to the records he also died in Connecticut on 7 Sep 1839. Yet the census records for Sherburne, Chenango, New York show James Guthrie living there in 1800 and 1810. There is also a statement in ‘American Guthrie’ that James moved his family from NY to OH, yet the family of James Guthrie and Mehitable Hickox seems to have remained in CT.

Autosomal DNA matches for descendants of James Guthrie and Mehitable Hickox suggest the family is still related to GFG2A, but there may be a mistaken identity when it comes to parents James Guthrie and Abigail Betts.

Joseph Guthrie was born on 8 October 1761 in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut and moved with his family to Lenox, Massachussets. Joseph married Phoebe Abbott on 10 Nov 1784, and they had several children before moving to Sherburne, Chenango, New York where they completed their family circle. There, Joseph became a prominent citizen and during the first election in the county became Justice of the Peace, an office he held for 28 years. Phoebe died in 1833, with Joseph outliving her by 12 years. He died at 83 years of age on 20 Jan 1845. They are buried at Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.

ABIGAIL GUTHRIE
1762CT – ????

Get ready for another shake up in this family tree. According to online sources, Abigail married Thomas Morehouse in Danbury, Connecticut on 23 January 1773. However, the Barbour Collection notes that Abigail, daughter of James and Abigail, was born on 1 August 1762, which would make her only 10 years of age at her marriage. This is likely another case of mistaken identity. One of the Morehouse children uses the middle name of Knapp. Could Morehouse’s wife, Abigail Guthrie, actually be the daughter of John Guthrie and Patience Knapp instead? They have no identified daughters and a list of ‘presumptive’ children. The inscription on Abigail (Guthrie) Morehouse’s grave marker indicates that she died 22 Sep 1830 at 79 years of age, which would make her DOB about 1751, and therefore too early to be a daughter of James Guthrie and Abigail Betts.

So, the real daughter of James and Abigail was born on 1 August 1762 in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut. If still alive when the family moved to Lenox, Massachusetts, she would have been 9 years of age. They remained there until 1793 when she would have been 21. So her marriage would most likely have been in Lenox, MA or in Sherburne, NY if she lived to adulthood and married. No evidence found.

Esther (or Easter) Guthrie was born 15 July 1765 in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut. She married Thomas Jenks, probably in Lenox, MA where they were located in the 1790 census. Afterward, they appear to have moved to Sherburne when the Guthrie family relocated there. Thomas died between 1800 and 1810. By that census year, Esther was listed as the Widow Jinkes. She died sometime after 22 July 1822 when she and her adult children sold land in Chenango County, NY to Stephen Harrington for $300.

Like his eldest brother Samuel, he studied medicine and became a physician of some note in Sherburne, Chenango, New York. Like many in the family he settled there after the return from Massachusetts. Nathan was married twice and had children by each of his wives. Mabelle Patterson (1768-1805) married him on 28 Nov 1792.. A couple of years after her death, Nathan remarried to Mrs Abi (Richardson) Hale. ‘Records of the Guthrie Family’ and ‘American Guthrie’ describe Nathan as “a man of great intelligence, with a profound insight into both the physical and mental natures of men. He enjoyed to an unusual degree the confidence and affection of his community. Nathan Guthrie died in 1820.
