Notes: William received a bequest from his father John Guthrie at his death in 1756 including 1/5 of his lands in Judea, Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut equally divided for quantity and quality between him and his four brothers. Also, one half of the dwelling house, a yoke of oxen, a bay mare, and four sheep. William had been a member of the First Congregational Church of Woodbury. He married Susanna Kirby about 1755. He and his wife changed congregations in 1764 when they were admitted to the West Preston Congregational Church of Litchfield County, CT. William and his brother Ephraim Guthrie signed a petition to annex their society to New Preston in 1767. He and his wife Susanna had 9 children, only one son. They removed to Jericho, New York, now Bainbridge, in 1787. Some of the family settled in New Berlin, NY. William is first mentioned in the local records at a town meeting held 19 April 1791. He remained in Jericho (Bainbridge) until his death in August of 1806. His widow, Susannah, lived until March 1813.

Eunice may be the eldest child of William and Susanna “Suse” (Kirby) Guthrie. Her DOB is an estimate from a barely legible grave marker listing her as 71 years of age at her death on 5 March 1828. She married James Graham of Farmington on 30 April 1778 in Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut. They were parents to 1 son and 4 daughters. James died in 1837. They are buried at Kirby Cemetery in Bainbridge, Chenango, New York.

RHODA GUTHRIE

Rhoda grew to adulthood in Litchfield County, Connecticut. Her birth was recorded in Kent on 25 may 1758. She married Heth (Heath, Heith) Kelsey on 30 April 1778 in Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut. He was a Revolutionary War Patriot Soldier. Their first two children were born in Connecticut, but they made the move to Jericho (now Bainbridge), Chenango, New York, probably about the same time as Rhoda’s parents in 1787. Their last two children were born in New York. Rhoda died at 80 years of age on 26 November 1838. Her husband lived until he was 95 dying on 5 July 1850. They are buried at Coventry Cemetery in Coventry, Chenango, New York.

ANNA GUTHRIE

Anna Guthrie was born in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut on 12 October 1761. She married a Kirby cousin, Reuben Kirby, on 29 October 1782 in Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut. They had 3 daughters. They also made the move from Connecticut to Chenango County, New York. Anna died in Afton at 31 years of age on 14 Sep 1793. She is buried at the Kirby Cemetery in Bainbridge. Reuben Kirby died in 1827 at the age of 67 years old. He had remarried in 1794 to Naomi Patterson with whom he had other children.

LOIS GUTHRIE

On the 6th of August in 1765, Susanna gave birth to her third daughter. Lois Guthrie was born in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut. She was the first wife of Rev War Col. Witter Johnston (1753NY-1839NY). Tragically, Lois died at only 21 years of age. Whether the cause of her death was illness or childbearing is unknown. They had no known surviving children. Witter remarried to Jane Campbell (1771-1817) on 24 Feb 1791 at Cherry Valley in Otsego, New York. They became parents to 3 sons and 4 daughters. Jane died in 1817, and Witter again became a widower. He died on 4 October 1839 at the age of 86. He is buried at Pioneer Cemetery in Sidney, Delaware County, New York along with his wives and several children.

WILLIAM J GUTHRIE

William Guthrie was the only son of the family. He was born on 4 December 1768 in Washington, Litchfield, CT. About 31 at his marriage in 1799 to Sarah Whitney (1775-1859), they moved to Jericho (later Bainbridge) where they raised their family of 3 sons and 5 daughters. William died in Jericho on 14 March 1813. Probate is dated on March 20th. He is buried at Kirby Cemetery in Bainbridge, Chenango, New York. His grave memorial is marked with a masonic symbol. The widow Sarah died in 1859.

Mary Guthrie was born in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut on 22 Dec 1770 and baptized on 27 Mar 1771. She was only 16 at her marriage to Roderick Moore in Chenango, New York on 2 June 1787. He was a Revolutionary War Patriot Soldier. They had a large family of 10 known children. They moved to Switzerland County, Indiana. Roderick died there in 1841 and Mary in 1860.

Jemima was born in the year America proclaimed its independence from Britain. She was baptized on 7 July 1776. Jemima married Gershom Clark Hyde (1768-1801), a physician. He graduated from Yale in 1788. They settled in Jericho (Bainbridge), NY where he served as a county judge. They had at least 2 children. Jemima was still in her 20s at her husband’s death in 1801. She is listed as the Head of Household in 1803 Tax Records for Chemung, NY. Jemima died on 13 March 1809 at 33 years of age. Gershom is buried at Saint Peters Churchyard.
