ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG11 – BRANCH B

Tobias Benjamin Guthery was born between 1781 and 1790 in Virginia. Since we know his descendant matches the GFG11 genetic profile, it indicates a connection with the Guthrie Family from GFG11 Branch A whose earliest ancestor is George Guthery born in Virginia on 16 August 1769. George’s marriage to Mary Young occurred on 29 Nov 1794, so Tobias is not likely to be a product of that marriage. George was already 25 in 1794, so it is possible that Tobias is a son of George by a previous (and unknown) marriage.

Tobias Benjamin Guthery could potentially be a younger brother to George Guthery. Both were born in Virginia, and the birth range would make him between 12 and 21 years younger than George, which is certainly possible.

A third option is that Tobias Benjamin Guthery descends from a collateral line of Guthrie men all carrying the Ballew/Ballou Y-DNA profile. This is less likely than one of the above as the project findings are limited to a small group.

Online trees erroneously list Tobias Benjamin Guthrey as T. Benjamin Guthrie, the son of GFG1A’s Henry Guthrie & Penelope Johnson. That man is likely named just Benjamin Guthrie. His descendants are part of the Y-DNA Project and are verified as belonging to GFG1A. Tobias Benjamin Guthrey is a completely different individual whose descendants genetically match GFG11.

POSEY JACKSON GUTHARY
1817GA-1892AR

Posey Jackson Guthary’s descendants continue to use the Guthary spelling. As far as is known, he is the only child of Tobias and Sarah Guthrey. He was reportedly born in Fairmont, Georgia on 18 May 1817. His marriage to Elizabeth Hayes is said to have taken place in North Carolina about 1835. They had 2 sons and 3 daughters. This couple lived in Union and Fannin Counties, Georgia in the 1850s and 1860s, and then moved to Arkansas.

Children: 5

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1781-1790: BIRTH of TOBIAS BENJAMIN GUTHREY
Virginia, USA

Both the 1830 and 1840 censuses list Tobias Guthrie in an age range to be born between 1781-1790.

1784: BIRTH of SARAH (MNU)
Kentucky or Tennessee, USA

The 1850 census lists Sarah Guthrey as being 61 and born in Kentucky. The 1860 census lists Sarah Guthrie as a 76 year old midwife born in Tennessee about 1784.

About 1815: MARRIAGE of TB GUTHREY & SARAH (MNU)
Tennessee or North Carolina, USA, presumably

1830: US CENSUS of NORTH CAROLINA
Macon County, North Carolina, USA

TOBIAS GUTHREY HOUSEHOLD:
1M 40-49 (1781-1790)
1F 30-39 (1791-1800)
1M 10-14 (1816-1820)

This is the only Guthrie household in the area.

About 1835: MARRIAGE of POSEY JACKSON GUTHARY
North Carolina, USA, presumably

Posey Jackson Guthary married Elizabeth Hayes. They settled in Georgia. He and his wife are presumably living with his parents in Union County, GA during the 1840 census. No children are listed under the age of 15, so any children born to the couple 1835-1839 may have died young.

1836: PROPERTY TAX
Captain Crow District, Rabun County, Georgia, USA

Tobias Guthrie
Polls: 1
Lands: 1 = (none listed)
Lands: 2 = 30
Lands: 3 = 370
Total Lands = 400 acres

He is the only Guthrie listed in that area.

Rabun County borders North and South Carolina, and is not far from the south-eastern border of Tennessee.

1839: PROPERTY SALE
Rabun County, Georgia, USA on 15 November 1839

Tobias Guthrie, of Rabun Co., GA, to Lazarus Tillie, of Rabun Co. “A certain lot, tract or parcel of land containing 400 acres more or less, situate lying and being in the County of Rabun and known and distinguished in the plan of said County as Lot 57”

1840: US CENSUS of GEORGIA, USA
Union County, Georgia, USA

TOBIAS GUTRY HOUSEHOLD:
1M 50-59 (1781-1790)
1F 40-49 (1791-1800)
1M & 1F 20-29 (1811-1820)
1F 15-19 (1821-1825)

The younger man is presumed to be Tobias and Sarah’s son, Posey Jackson Guthary. One of the younger women is presumed to be Posey’s wife. The identity of the other younger woman is unknown. She does not appear to be a daughter of Tobias and Sarah as her age would have indicated she should also be listed in the 1830 census, but they have no daughter listed at that time.

1850: US CENSUS of GEORGIA
District 85, Union County, Georgia, USA

TB GUTHRY HOUSEHOLD:
TB Guthry 81 M Farmer VA
Sarah Guthry 61 F KY
Rachel Guthry 10 F GA (likely gr-dau).

Notes: Next door to household of P.J. Guthrey & family. TB is listed as 81, which is probably an original census error as two other records have corroborative estimates of his age. He should be 60-69 during this census.

PJ GUTHRY HOUSEHOLD:
PJ Guthry 32 M Farmer RE 100 GA
Elizabeth Guthry 35 F VA

Tobias Benjamin Guthrey/Sarah MNU > Posey Jackson Guthary/Elizabeth Hayes> Andrew Jackson Guthary/Eva Catherine Dellinger > Calloway Collumbus Guthary/Ida Jane Cardwell (GGP)

Findings:

The primary finding is the Y-DNA match to men of the Ballew/Ballou name. A search of the lineages of these genetic matches could lead to the discovery of a common ancestral location in Virginia, if that is indeed the place where the causal event for GFG11 occurred.

There are currently 5 men matching GFG11’s genetic profile, only one of whom descends from Tobias Benjamin Guthery.

Kit 267028 has a Big-Y500 test, but the results for markers 68-111 remain pending. Designated Haplogroup R-A10673. He matches Group Mode DNA 67/67.
