ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG16 BRANCH A

Guthrie Family Group 16’s branches stretch into Australia and Canada. These lineages trace their mutual ancestry back to Robert Guthrie & Janet Andrew, who lived in Govan, Lanarkshire and New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The identity of Robert’s parents depends on the accuracy of information gathered about his life as there are several potential candidate couples.

Robert’s children were recorded as being born/baptized in either New Kilpatrick or Govan, with the first and later children being born in Govan. There is a death record for Robert Guthrie, a miller, in Partick, Govan, Lanarkshire dated 2 April 1827. His age was listed as 52, which would estimate his DOB as about 1775.

There are 17 Robert Guthrie birth/baptisms recorded in Scotland between 1770 and 1780. There are 3 in Dunbarton and none in Lanark.

Dunbarton:
1) Robert Guthrie & Margaret Currie in Cardross – son Robert 15/31 Mar 1771
2) William Guthrie & Margaret MacKimm in Bonhill – son Robert 8 May 1771
3) William Guthrie & Elizabeth McKenais/McNair in New or East Kilpatrick – son Robert 5 July 1776.

Note that the last one is located in New or East Kilpatrick, which is where several of Robert’s children were also born. William & Elizabeth McKenais/McNair are the most likely of the tree couples based on location. The 1776 DOB is also closest to the estimated date for the Robert Guthrie who died in Govan in 1827.

Genetic confirmation requires Y-DNA testing from at least one direct line male Guthrie descendant of William Guthrie & Elizabeth McKenais/McNair or adequate triangulation of Autosomal DNA testing from multiple descendants.

Regarding Robert’s wife, Janet Andrew, the following potential parents are found in the records of Dunbartonshire and Lanarkshire, Scotland (1770-1785):
1) William Andrew & Jean Read in New or East Kilpatrick on 13 Aug 1774
2) David Andrew & Janet Tarbett in Glasgow on 22 Aug 1778
3) William Andrew & Jean McLae in New or East Kilpatrick on 25 Nov 1781

JANE GUTHRIE
1801 SCT – 18??

Jane lawful daughter to Robert Guthrie and Janet Andrew was born/baptized on 10 January 1801 in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland and recorded in the Old Parish Register.

There are 2 potential marriage records in Lanarkshire between 1815-1830:
1) Janet Guthrie to Peter McIntyre on 23 Jul 1827 in Glasgow. (Note this could be her mother remarrying just months after Robert’s death.)
2) Jane Guthrie to William Park on 22 Mar 1829 in Old Monkland or Coatbridge.

No obvious death records in either Dunbartonshire or Lanarkshire.

Children: Unknown
Family Finder Participants: No

ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
1802SCT – 18??

Old Parish Registers: Robert Guthrie in Drumry & Janet Andrew his wife had a daughter baptized called Elizabeth 11 July 1802 in East (New) Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

This is the first indication of a specific residence where Robert & Janet made their home. This family lived in Drumry in 1802, which is located in East (or New) Kilpatrick. Drumry is very close to Glasgow, which is most likely why the family seems to have moved between the two locations.

There are 2 potential marriage records in Lanarkshire between 1815-1830:
1) Elizabeth Guthrie to James Kennedy on 23 Jun 1818 in Glasgow
2) Elizabeth Guthrie to William Wishart on 24 Jan 1826 in Glasgow

Dunbarton death records rule out marriage option#1 as the 1874 death of Elizabeth (Guthrie) Kennedy, wife of James Kennedy, spirit merchant) shows that her parents were Peter Guthrie, a glassblower, and Ann Webster.

No obvious death records in either Dunbartonshire or Lanarkshire.

Children: Unknown
Family Finder Participants: No

ROBERT GUTHRIE
1804SCT – 1883SCT

Robert lawful son of Robert Guthrie and Janet Andrew born Drumry 26th February 1804 in East (New) Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

Robert removed to Renfrewshire where he married Jane/Jean Kilgour on 7 November 1828:
Robert Guthrie in this parish (Lochwinnoch) & Jane Kilgour in the parish of Renfrew gave in their names to be proclaimed which was done.

According to various records he worked as a gardener, field laborer, and farmer.

The family is found in the 1841 census of New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, and thereafter in the census records for Erskine, Renfrewshire, Scotland. However, it appears that Robert’s wife died between 1841-1851 as she is no longer listed.

The death of Robert Guthrie Guthrie was recorded as follows:
Robert Guthrie, late farm servant, pauper on roll of poor, single, died 2 June 1883 22oPM at Meadowhead, Erskine, aged 79, Parents: Robert Guthrie & Jane Andrew, both dec’d, COD: Melanoma, Informant: Myron Robertson, Inspector of Poor.

WILLIAM GUTHRIE
1805SCT – 1868SCT

William lawful son of Robert Guthrie and Janet Andrew born Drumrye 20th Sep 1805 in East (New) Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

Like his older brother, William also removed to Renfrewshire where he married Ann Reston on 12 Jun 1834. He worked as a carter.

His death record is found in the Statutory Registers: William Guthrie, carter, married to Ann Reston, died at 530AM on 12 May 1868 at 53 Manse Street, Renfrew, aged 57. Parents: Robert Guthrie, roadman, and Janet Andrew, both dec’d. COD: General decay. Informant: David Guthrie, son.

Note that this record lists William’s father as a roadman rather than the miller of the 1827 death record.

Children: Ann (1835), David Reston (1837), Robert (1839), Janet (1842)
Y-DNA Project Participants: No
Family Finder Participants: No

MARY GUTHRIE
1809SCT – 18??

Dated 6 September 1809: Mary lawful daughter to Robert Guthrie & Janet Andrew in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

THOMAS GUTHRIE
1812SCT – 1861SCT

Thomas, lawful son to Robert Guthrie & Janet Andrew. Dated 24 April 1812. Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Thomas Guthrie was the second son of the family by that name. Another brother was born in 1807 and presumably died young.

Census records show that Thomas Guthrie, like his older brothers, also lived in Erskine, Renfrewshire, Scotland, so it is possible that the entire family was living there at some point. He married Agnes Munn, daughter of Stewart Munn and Jane Donald, who was born 20 Apr 1817 in Erskine.

Thomas Guthrie & Agnes Munn, both of this parish, have given in their names to be proclaimed for the purpose of marriage & were married 6 February 1835.

They raised their family in Erskine, Renfrewshire, Scotland where Thomas worked initially as an agricultural laborer and later as a grocer.

Death Record: Thomas Guthrie, grocer, married to Agnes Munn, died 10 Sep 1861 at 8AM at Shelton Cottage, Erskine, aged 48. Parents: Robert Guthrie, agricultural laborer, dec’d, mother not identified. COD: Dyspepsia. Informant: Stewart Guthrie, son.

Agnes (Munn) Guthrie outlived her husband.

Death Record: Agnes Guthrie (widow of Thomas Guthrie, grocer) died 31 July 1869 at 730AM at Bishopson, Erskine, aged 52. Parents: Stewart Munn, joiner, and Jane Donald, both decd, COD: Apoplexy. Informant: Stewart Guthrie, son.

Children: Robert (1835), Stewart (1837), Jean (1839), Thomas Robert (1842), Janet (1843), James (1854)

Robert & Agnes’ son, Thomas Robert Guthrie, married Christina Rae, and moved to Carleton, Ontario, Canada. This line is represented in the Guthrie DNA Project.

JOHN GUTHRIE
1814SCT – 1882SCT

September 26 1814: John, lawful son to Robert Guthrie & Janet Andrew in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

John Guthrie was 22 at his marriage to Janet Munn, the daughter of Stewart Munn and Jane Donald. Janet’s sister Agnes Munn was the wife of his brother Thomas.

John Guthrie & Janet Munn both of this parish have given in their names to be proclaimed for the purpose of marriage and were married 14 April 1837.

Census records show that John and Janet resided first in Erskine through 1861 and then removed to Dunbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland where they lived at the Bishopton Gardens where John worked as a master gardener.

Death Record: John Guthrie, master gardener, married to Janet Munn, died 12AM at 24 Church Street, Dumbarton, aged 63. Parents: Robert Guthrie, farm laborer & Janet Thompson, both decd. COD: Dyspepsia 7days. Informant: John Guthrie, son.

Note that this is the first indication that Robert’s widow, Janet (Andrew) Guthrie might have remarried after his death. It could also be a simple error on the part of the informant, or an original transcription error on the source document.

Janet (Munn) Guthrie lived for 7 years after the death of her husband John.

Death Record: Janet Guthrie, widow of John Guthrie, nurseryman (master), died 2 June 1889 at 205AM at 9 Burnside Place, Dumbarton, aged 67. Parents: Stewart Munn, joiner (master), and Jane Donald, both decd. COD: Diarrhea 12 days. Informant: Robert Guthrie, son.

Children: Robert (1838), William (1840), Stewart (1842), Jane (1845), Janet (1848), John (1851).

This line is represented in the Guthrie DNA Project by an Australian descendant of son Stewart Guthrie, although the family did not leave Dunbartonshire until the 1930s.

Robert Guthrie, 52, miller. COD: Consumption.

Abt. 1828: FAMILY MOVES to RENFREWSHIRE, SCOTLAND

It is possible that the 1827 death record belongs to a different Robert Guthrie and that this Robert Guthrie died in Renfrewshire where Guthrie death records appear to be few and far between. (Was there record loss?) In any case, the sons of the family all appear to have moved to Renfrew.

1828: MARRIAGE of SON – ROBERT GUTHRIE to JEAN KILGOUR
Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland on 7 November 1828

Robert Guthrie was employed as a gardener when he married Jean Kilgour. They had 4 children: John (1829), Jean (1831), Rebecca Janet (1833), and Marian (1838). They are listed as a family living back in New Kilpatrick in the 1841 census. Tragedy or separation may have struck this family. After the 1851 census Robert Guthrie appears to be a loner.

1834: MARRIAGE of SON – WILLIAM GUTHRIE to ANN RESTON

They continued to reside in Erskine, Renfrewshire until their deaths, Thomas in 1861 and Agnes in 1869.

This family resided for several decades in Erskine before moving to Dunbartonshire. They had 4 boys and 2 girls: Robert (1838), William (1840), Stewart (1842), Jane (1845), Janet (1848), and John (1851). John became a master gardener. He died in 1882 and Janet in 1889.

Guthrie Family Group 16 does not match the Direct Paternal Line (Y-DNA) profile of any of the other established groups.

This could be due to simple lack of participation from other Guthrie relations in the area of Drumry, East (New) Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, near Glasgow, or in Renfrewshire where the family also resided.

Since our only two participants matching this genetic profile descend from the same ancestor, namely Robert Guthrie 1776SCT-1827SCT, it is possible that the entire line is the result of an event such as adoption, false paternity, or feudal law, that caused a genetic mismatch between these men and one of the established groups.

More information is required to determine which situation is correct.

  1. I am a descendant of John Guthrie and Janet Munn, my maternal great great grandparents. This website has been very useful in breaking down the brick wall of John’s parentage. I did an Ancestry DNA test a few years ago. Would it be helpful if I uploaded it to FTDNA? There are no male relatives so YDNA testing isn’t possible. I also have Guthrie ancestors on my paternal side – haven’t researched them yet.

    • Hi Gill,

A combination of AncestryDNA access and transferring your results to FTDNA would give you the best results. Ancestry has the largest database, while FTDNA is some additional tools for interpretation. It would also give you access to a second database for researching all of your family members. The transfer and access to all of your matches is free, but I do recommend their $19 fee to unlock the Chromosome Browser feature. Since you have dual Guthrie ancestry, it will be a little more challenging to unravel your matches to determine if you’re dealing with a single genetic family or two distinct ancestral lines. I suggest inviting me to view your tree so that I can see the lineages listed on your paternal and maternal sides in order to try to differentiate those Guthrie matches. My ancestry username is AnnGU3.

  2. Thank you. My mother had also tested with Ancestry – I manage her kit. I have uploaded both our DNA results to FTDNA. I look forward to investigating further. Neither of us are a match with you however, but she has a good match with a man with surname Guthrie who is descended from this GFG16 Group A.

    • Now that you have uploaded your kits to FTDNA, you should join the Guthrie DNA Project. Go to the surname projects and complete a Join Request form for each kit.
