ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG1A – BRANCH G
Until recently, William Guthrie and Elizabeth Wingfield’s descendants were listed as an Ungrouped Guthrie Family. A YDNA match for GFG1A has led to the discovery of a documentation/family placement error, which shows that the family of John William Guthrie c1800VA-c1855 and Elizabeth White is not associated with the GFG2A families of Augusta County, Virginia as is documented in ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ by Laurence R. Guthrie.
The original error seems to have come about because John Guthrie settled in Augusta County, Virginia where members of GFG2A-Branch H were also living. This included two men from that group also named John Guthrie, whose families were enumerated in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 censuses. Ancestry lists this John Guthrie as John Guthier Thatcher, when in fact the original image lists him as John Guthrie (Teacher), a single male of 16-25. Parentheses were used to differentiate him from the other men of the same name.
William Guthrie and Elizabeth Wingfield are the likely parents to John William Guthrie as he uses the Wingfield name for one of his sons. A second YDNA test from one of their direct male descendants is required for genetic confirmation.
The 1810 census for Amherst County, Virginia includes William Guthrie, David Guthrie, Edward Guthrie, and Nathaniel Guthrie. These are potential relatives. The latter has been identified as the household of Nathaniel Guthrie and Nancy Johns. They had only 1 son. No participant YDNA in the project for that line at this time. David and Edward Guthrie remain unidentified, but appear to be too old to be one of the 14 children of William & Elizabeth (Wingfield) Guthrie.

Death: 1828
Location: Amherst County, Virginia, USA

CHILDREN: 14
UNKNOWN SON
Born 1795-1800VA – Unknown
Based on the enumeration of the William Guthrie family in 1810 Amherst, VA, he presumably had a son aged 10-15 living in the household. This male is too young to be the David Guthrie or Edward Guthrie listed in the 1820 census for that location.

JOHN WILLIAM GUTHRIE
1802VA-1852
John William Guthrie is the direct paternal ancestor of YDNA participant Kit 259168. A family ‘remembrance’ card lists his DOD as 1852 at 50 years of age. He moved to Staunton, Augusta, Virginia when he was 20 to work as a teacher (see census). On 13 Dec 1824, he was joined in marriage with Elizabeth L White in Augusta, Virginia, and they continued to reside there through the 1850 census. This couple were parents to 10 children: George Wyatt (1826), Catherine ‘Kate’ (1828), John Wingfield (1830), James Hamilton (1831), Emily Jane (1833), Elizabeth Mary (1835), Susan Cornelia (1840), Sarah Oliver ‘Sallie’ (1845), Amanda L (1847), and Samuel C (1848). John William Guthrie died in 1852, location unverified. His family continued to live in Augusta County, but various trees list the possibility that he died in Indiana or Missouri.

UNKNOWN SON
Born 1801-1810VA – Unknown
There are 5 males under 10 years of age enumerated in the William Guthrie family for 1810.

Born 1801-1810VA – Unknown
There are 5 males under 10 years of age enumerated in the William Guthrie family for 1810.

CATHERINE GUTHRIE
Born 1801-1810VA – Unknown
There is an Amherst marriage for Catherine Guthrie and Campbell Franklin on 5 Jan 1819, W: William Guthrie. SW: Rich. Burros, Jno. Turner. MR: 7 Jan 1819, Pleasant Thurman. Campbell Franklin later became guardian to some of the younger children of William and Elizabeth (Wingfield) Guthrie. The census records suggest they may have been living with them.

NICHOLAS GUTHRIE
Born 1804-1811VA – Unknown
Nicholas Guthrie was under 21 in 1825 when his mother Elizabeth Guthrie was assigned as his legal guardian making his earliest probable DOB 1804. He was over 21 in 1832 when he was assigned the guardianship of his younger siblings making his latest probable year of birth 1811.
He could potentially be the Nicholas Guthrie who married Esther Franklin in Campbell County, Virginia on 21 Nov 1836. The family already has a Franklin connection with the marriage of Nicholas’ sister Catherine to Campbell Franklin.

NATHAN GUTHRIE
Born 1807-11VA – c1858
Nathan Guthrie is probably in the group of sons under 10 in 1810. He was named in his father’s probate records when his mother Elizabeth Guthrie was assigned guardianship if her younger children: Nathan, Susan, Sarah, Oliver P, and Elizabeth in 1828. So he was probably under 21 in 1828. He no longer needed a guardian in 1832 when his brother Nicholas assumed the guardianship over Sally (Sarah), Laurence P, Oliver, and Elizabeth. So he was probably at least 21 by 1832, making his birthdate range 1807-1811.
Nathaniel Guthrie, Sarah W Guthrie, and Susan L Stockton were listed together in the 1850 census of Lafayette County, Missouri.
Nathan wrote a will on 23 oct 1849, which was recorded 19 Jul 1858. He named his sister Susan Stockton as his executor. His property consisted of slaves, which he left to his sisters Susan Stockton and Sarah Guthrie.

SUSAN L GUTHRIE
1810VA-1886MO
Susan was probably born about 1810. She was under 21 in 1828, and still had a guardian at the time of her marriage to Preston Stockton on 9 May 1831. Her brother-in-law Campbell Franklin is listed as her guardian with surety provided by brothers Nicholas Guthrie and Nathan Guthrie.
Susan was widowed and living with her siblings Nathaniel and Sarah in Lafayette, Missouri during the 1850 census. After Nathan’s death she continued to live with Sarah in Westport, Jackson, Missouri.
Susan “dropped dead” according to the headline on 12 Oct 1886 in Marshall, Saline, Missouri. Aged 76, she was simply making her bed. (The Democrat-Argus, 1896)

LUCY GUTHRIE
Born 1811-1817VA – 1835
Lucy Guthrie was one of the younger daughters. In 1828, her mother was assigned as her guardian. She married on 23 Sep 1833 to Creed Taylor, so she was most likely born no later than 1817. They are credited with one daughter: Mary Louise Taylor (1834). Trees list Lucy’s death as 1835.

SARAH ‘SALLY’ W GUTHRIE
Born 1816-1818VA
Sally Guthrie was born between 1811-1824 in Amherst County, Virginia. After her father’s death, her mother was initially assigned as her guardian. Her brother Nicholas Guthrie became guardian in 1832. She was still single in 1849 when her brother Nathan Guthrie died naming her as one of his heirs. She inherited some of his slaves.
Sally remained single and continued to live with her sister Susan in Westport, Jackson, Missouri during the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. Her sister died in 1886. Unknown if Sally died before or after her.

LAURENCE P GUTHRIE
Born 1817VA – Unknown
Laurence still required a guardian in 1832 when his brother Nicholas was assigned to him, Sally, Oliver, and Elizabeth indicating they were probably still under 21 (Born after 1811).
Unconfirmed, but it is possible that he is the single man living in Sierra County, California in 1860 listed as L. P. Guthrie, a laborer. Also, French Corral, Nevada, California during the 1880 census listed as P. Lawrence Guthrie, born in VA 1817, working as a laborer. Voter Registration entries in 1867, 1871, 1873, 1875, 1877, 1879, 1884, 1886 Nevada, California for Lawrence Perry Guthrie and in Yuba, California for 1892 for Lawrence P. Guthrie.

OLIVER P GUTHRIE
1818VA-1896MO
Oliver P Guthrie appears to be the best documented offspring of William and Elizabeth (Wingfield) Guthrie. He was born on 28 Sep 1818 in Amherst County, Virginia, the ‘next to the youngest’ of 14 children. He married Frances J F Mead on 17 Sep 1842 in that same place. The couple were parents to William A (1845), Annie Elizabeth (1846), Lucy Virginia (1848), Charles Anthon (1848), Mary Frances (1850), James (1852), Walter Scott (1855), Prudence Olivia (1858), and Ida May (1860). They moved to Lafayette County, Missouri by 1850, and to Saline County, Missouri after that. Oliver was a minister, an educator, and County School Examiner. He died in Marshall, Saline, Missouri on 18 Sep 1896 about ten years after his wife Frances.

ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
Born 1819-1824VA – Unknown
Elizabeth Guthrie was in the group of younger siblings. Based on the listing of orphans, she was the youngest. Elizabeth married John G Wingfield in Amherst County, VA on 11 Nov 1843, surety: Oliver Guthrie and Nathan Guthrie. No further details.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
BEFORE 1752
Virginia, USA, possibly in Amherst County or Hanover County
Based on census records, it appears that William Guthrie was born before 1766. There is a Property Record dated 11 Jan 1773 from Leonard Goff to Wm Guttry. Assuming that this is the same William Guthrie, he would have to be of legal age to purchase land shifting his likely birth year to before 1752.
The biographical sketch on his son, Oliver P Guthrie, claims that William Guthrie was of Scotch-Irish descent and that his family was from either the North of Ireland or the South of Scotland. William was reportedly born in Hanover County., and was 52 at the time of his death. Since his death is estimated at 1824, that would make his DOB about 1772. If true, the Property Purchase in 1773 and the 1783 Tax Record would not be his.

Findings:
The YDNA matches have been successfully been traced back to John William Guthrie and Elizabeth White. John’s likely parents are William Guthrie & Elizabeth Wingfield. Confirmatory matching is recommended. These two are brothers with YDNA matches to the GFG1A profile. Ideally, we need another direct male descendant of the Guthrie-Wingfield line descending from a different son to conclusively prove the line going back to William’s generation. They had 14 children including several sons, so there is a good chance of finding a candidate.
The FF Kits previously linked to GFG2A-Branch H have now been moved to GFG1A. This is corroborated by an autosomal to Kit 259168.
