ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG2A – BRANCH D

The family traditions reveal the Archibald Guthery line began in Northern Ireland, possibly in County Derry. The men of this line were farmers and soldiers, participating generation to generation in the struggled of colonial life on the frontiers of Western Pennsylvania. Whiteley, Greene County, Pennsylvania is the hub for the bulk of their descendants.

Two separate lineages are tied to Guthrie Family Group 2A – Branch D due to a potential relationship with a man named Archibald Guthrie, who was probably born about 1710, and served in the French & Indian War in 1760 as a private in Captain Armstrong’s Company (PA Arch Set 5, vol 1, p305). Archibald Guthrey made a New Purchase Application which was drawn in the lottery 25 July 1769 and given the #3664. He applied for a 300-acre tract in North Huntingdon, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. The survey was returned 31 March 1788 to John Irwin Esq, & Rec. Harrisonburg Survey Book C89, p273. That is the extent of what is known about the man who has been theorized to be the father of John Guthery (1744-1823) and Archibald Guthery (1753-1779).

Archibald Guthery of the French & Indian War is also theorized to be one of the men in the Brotherhood of Seven who came to America from Northern Ireland. There is no documented evidence of such an immigration, but the volume of men matching the GFG2A genetic profile seems to be sizable.

There are several criteria considered by Rev. Laurence R Guthrie, author of ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ in considering that Archibald is the father of the two men now assigned to Branch D lineages.

• Use of the Guthery surname spelling variation.
• Use of the forename Archibald: Archibald (Self & Son), John (Son)
• Military Service in the same Revolutionary War regiment.

Elizabeth Guthrie was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania on 20 Dec 1774. She married Jacob Fordyce in PA on 29 Nov 1798. During the 1850 census they were living in Centre, Greene, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth apparently died on her birthday, 20 December 1857. Jacob followed her in death two years later on 21 Nov 1859, both of them in Greene County, Pennsylvania.

JANE GUTHRIE

Jane Guthrie was born about 1777 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. She married Andrew Dye, the son of Andrew Dye and Sarah Minor, also of Greene County, Pennsylvania. Online trees list both PA and OH has their marriage location, but it was most likely Greene County, Pennsylvania where both of them were living at the time. The Dye family including Andrew’s parents moved to Ohio. Andrew and Jane settled in Miami County where their children were born: Stephen, Archibald, Andrew Alexander, Rebecca, Solomon, Sarah. Jane died sometime between 1806-1812. Andrew remarried on 17 Nov 1812 in Warren, Ohio to Catherine Riffle. They had several more children: Jane, Minor, Miranda, Stephen, Alexander McCullough.

ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE

Archibald Guthrie never knew his father who died in the year of his birth during the Revolutionary War. He purchased his father’s farm in 1806, reportedly also the year of his marriage to Elizabeth Lemley, and lived on it his entire life. Their 9 children were all born and reared there in Whitely, Greene, Pennsylvania. Like his father, Archibald also served as a soldier in defense of the frontiers of Western Pennsylvania and in the War of 1812. Six years after Elizabeth’s 1829 death, Archibald remarried to widow Mary Phebe (Roseberry) Scott with whom he had two daughters.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1700-1720: BIRTH OF ARCHIBALD GUTHERY the IMMIGRANT (I)
This birth range is an estimate based on the known birth dates of presumed sons John and Archibald Guthery in 1744 and 1753 respectively making him around 20-ish to 40-ish at the elder son’s birth. Family tradition suggests his birth location is probably Northern Ireland.

1720-1740: AMERICAN IMMIGRATION
According to descendants of Archibald Guthery’s line, the family came to America from Northern Ireland. No specifics or documentation found.

1740s: MARRIAGE
The identity of Archibald Guthery’s spouse is unknown. The birth of the eldest known son is in 1744, so presumably a marriage would have occurred about that time. There could be other children undocumented for this family if indeed they are a family at all.

1744: BIRTH OF PRESUMED SON – JOHN GUTHERY
John Guthery was born in Pennsylvania on 14 April 1744. He married Lydia Baldwin in 1771 and they settled on the Monongahela River near the mouth of Big Whitely Creek, initially a part of Bedford County, Virginia that later became part of Washington County, Pennsylvania after the settlement of a land dispute between the two states. They were parents to 8 sons and 4 daughters. John was a Revolutionary War Soldier serving in the same regiment as his presumed brother Archibald. This family eventually moved to Pike County, Ohio where John is credited as the person who ‘laid out the town of Piketon, and was instrumental in making it the county seat’.

1753: BIRTH of PRESUMED SON – ARCHIBALD GUTHERY (II)
Archibald Guthery was born in Pennsylvania on February 1753, probably in Westmoreland or Washington County. Greene County, Pennsylvania was not formed until 1796 from parts of Washington County. He would later own property in Whitely, Greene, PA.

1760: MILITARY SERVICE in the FRENCH & INDIAN WAR
Pennsylvania, Fort Bedford – 24 January 1760
Archibald Guthery (The Immigrant) served as a private in Captain Armstrong’s company during the French & Indian War stationed at the Fort Bedford Garrison. (PA Arch Set 5, Vol 1, p.305)

Fort Bedford was originally used as a staging ground and central storage area by the British Army’s westward push toward the French garrisons during the French & Indian War. After the bulk of the army moved out the fort was garrisoned by about 800 men, and saw little action during the war.

1769: PROPERTY WARRANT
North Huntingdon, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania – 25 July 1769
Archibald Guthrey made a New Purchase Application which was drawn in the lottery 25 July 1769 and given the #3664. He applied for a 300-acre tract. The survey was ret’d 31 Mar 1788 to John Irwin Esq. & Rec. Harrisonburg Survey Book C89, p273.

AFTER 1769: DEATH of ARCHIBALD GUTHERY (THE IMMIGRANT)
The death of Archibald Guthery (The Immigrant / French & Indian War) is a mystery. This 1769 document is the last credited to him.

c1774: MARRIAGE of ARCHIBALD GUTHERY & REBECCA PHILLIPS
The date may have been a year or two earlier, but there has been no marriage document found. Their marriage would be cut short less than a decade later when Archibald died during the American Revolution.

1774: BIRTH of ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
Elizabeth was the eldest known child of Archibald Guthery and Rebecca Phillips. She was born about 1774, an unproven date. She married Jacob Fordyce on 29 Nov 1798 in Pennsylvania. They were parents to 4 sons and 4 daughters. Elizabeth died in 1857 and Jacob in 1859, both in Greene County, PA. Although many of their children remained in Pennsylvania, some settled in Michigan.

1777: BIRTH of JANE GUTHRIE
Jane’s date of birth is a rough estimate only. She was born in Pennsylvania. Her marriage date to Andrew Dyer is unknown as is any other data on her family, residence, or death.

1779: BIRTH of ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE (III)
Archibald was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania on 3 March 1779. His father was already serving in the Colonial Army by that time, so it’s possible that father and son never saw each other. A descendant of Archibald’s (III) son Samuel indicates that his father’s family was of Irish origin, which fits the profile for that part of GFG2A.

1779: DEATH of ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE (II)
Fort Pitt, Pennsylvania – 5 August 1779.
Archibald served as a soldier in the American Revolution. He was ‘wounded by an indian at what is now East Liberty, Pittsburgh, PA. He made his way back to Fort Pitt and died from the effects of his wound on 5 August 1779. Fort Pitt was located in what is now Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

1806: MARRIAGE of ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE (III) & ELIZABETH LEMLEY
The marriage probably took place in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The 1806 date may be an estimate. No document found.

1806: PROPERTY PURCHASE
Archibald Guthrie (III) “bought his father’s farm and lived on it his entire life. His children were born and reared on this place.” LRG lists no data on the actual purchase. Does anyone have a copy of the deed?

1810: BIRTH of JACOB GUTHRIE, SON of ARCHIBALD & ELIZABETH
Jacob was born on 5 September 1810 in Whiteley, Greene, PA. He married Lucinda Hobbs on 3 March 1833. The were parents to 11 children all born in Whiteley. The family moved to Mercer County, Illinois between 1860-1870. Jacob died there on 7 Oct 1871 and Lucinda on 17 Apr 1873.

1813: BIRTH of SARAH GUTHRIE, DAU. OF ARCHIBALD & ELIZABETH
Sarah was born on 10 Oct 1813 in Whitely, Greene, PA. She married Rev. William W Leonard on 21 Mar 1833. This couple had six children. They moved to Coe, Isabella, Michigan between 1760-1770. William died there in 1875. Sarah survived him and lived to the age of 85 when she died on the 2nd of March 1889.

1816: BIRTH of SOLOMON GUTHRIE, SON OF ARCHIBALD & ELIZABETH
Solomon was born on 7 April 1816 in Whiteley, Greene, PA. His marriage to Elizabeth Fry took place on 31 Jan 1839. They were parents to 10 children and lived their entire lives in Greene County. They died within two years of each other, Solomon on 2 Dec 1892, and Elizabeth on 20 Sep 1894.

1818: BIRTH of JOSEPHUS FRANKLIN GUTHRIE, SON of ARCH. & ELIZ.
Known to his family as Cephus Guthrie, this son was born on 10 September 1818. His first marriage to Sarah Scott took place about 1838 in Somerset, Pennsylvania. They lived in Center and Whitley, Greene County, PA where they raised their 8 children. Sarah died in 1854, leaving Cephus with a household of young children. He remarried within about a year to Mazy (White) Lemley, a widow with 5 children of her own. Mazy died 6 May 1890, survived by Cephus who died 8 years later on 18 Jan 1898. He is buried at the Guthrie Cemetery in Kirby, Greene, Pennsylvania.

Note: If Archibald & Elizabeth are 1M/1F 26-44, who’s the other M of that age range? The F of 16-25 is also unaccounted for unless they are both the same extra individuals from the 1810 census. 1M10-15 = Jacob, 2M & 2F under 10 = Solomon & Cephus and Sarah & Unknown. Who is the extra female under 10? It’s not son Samuel listed under the wrong gender because he was not born until mid-December.

1820: BIRTH of SAMUEL GUTHRIE, SON of ARCHIBALD & ELIZABETH
Samuel Guthrie was born 18 Dec 1820 in Whiteley, Greene, PA. His wife was Nancy Patterson, whom he married about 1840. The had about 8 kids. Sometime between 1860-1870, they moved from Whiteley to Perry, still in Greene County, PA. Samuel died there on 29 Mar 1903. Nancy had preceded him in death two years earlier on 18 Apr 1901.

1823: BIRTH of EZEKIEL GUTHRIE, SON of ARCHIBALD & ELIZABETH
Ezekiel was born on 4 Jan 1823 in Whiteley, Greene, PA. He married Sarah Jane McClellan about 1864. They had 3 children, a daughter and two sons. Ezekiel lived in Whiteley the remainder of his life. He died there on 3 Nov 1902. Sarah moved to West Bethlehem, Washington, Pennsylvania to live with her youngest son, James Perry Guthrie, and family.

1825: BIRTH of CHARLOTTE GUTHRIE, DAU. of ARCH. & ELIZABETH
Charlotte Guthrie was born on 30 Jan 1825 in Whiteley, Greene, PA. She married Rinehart Bennett Church on 6 Dec 1842 when she was 17 years old. They were parents to 10 children. They were living in Perry, Monroe, Ohio during the 1860 census, but moved back to Greene County, Pennsylvania, where they lived out the rest of their lives in Centre and Rogersville.

1827: BIRTH of ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE (IV), SON of ARCH. & ELIZABETH
Archibald was born in Greene County, PA on 21 Feb 1827. He married Pleasant Jane Temple about 1853, but he died at the age of 32 on 9 April 1859. They had 1 daughter. His widow remarried to a George A. Burk.

1829: BIRTH of ELIZABETH GUTHRIE, DAU. of ARCH. & ELIZABETH
Elizabeth Guthrie was born 5 March 1829 in Greene County, PA. She married James R Bradford about 1844. She was about 15 years of age at the time, and James 10 years her senior. Elizabeth died on 11 May 1845 at the age of 16, her cause of death unknown. James later remarried to Elizabeth Pipes.

1829: DEATH of ELIZABETH (LEMLEY) GUTHRIE
Archibald’s wife Elizabeth apparently died from postpartum complications on the same day of her daughter’s birth on 5 March 1829. The infant was named for her. She is buried in the Guthrie Cemetery in Kirby, Greene, Pennsylvania.

Mary’s first husband, Robert S Scott, died in Greene County, PA in 1833 leaving her with 3 sons and 2 daughters between the ages of 3 -14. She remarried to widower Archibald Guthrie probably in either 1834 or 1835 as their first child was born in 1836. No record found.

1836: BIRTH of MARY JANE GUTHRIE, DAU. of ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE & MARY PHEBE (ROSEBERRY) SCOTT
Mary Jane Guthrie was born 23 Sep 1836 in Whiteley, Greene, PA. She was married to George Remley on 9 Dec 1854. They had 9 children. This couple moved to Des Moines, Clark, Missouri by 1870, and then by 1880 to Saint Francisville in the same county. They lived in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri between 1900-1920. George died 23 Feb 1918. Jane moved to Woodson County, Kansas. She died 28 April 1927.

1840: BIRTH of MARTHA GUTHRIE, DAU. OF ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE & MARY PHEBE (ROSEBERRY) SCOTT
Martha was born in 22 Feb 1841. She married widower Henry Church whose first wife was Elizabeth Wiley by whom he had 2 daughters: Mary Annabelle & Catherine. Martha and Henry married about 1872. They had 3 children: George, Ida, and Daisy. The family moved from Greene, PA to Calhoun, WV sometime between 1880 and 1900. Martha died 13 Feb 1910, and Henry at the end of the same year, 3 Dec 1910.

1845: DEATH of ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE (III)
Archibald died on 23 August 1845 and is buried in Guthrie Cemetery in Kirby, Greene County, Pennsylvania. He was 66. His estate was probated on 3 Sep 1845.

Findings:
Archibald Guthery (Jr) 1779-1845 & Wife Elizabeth Lemley had 6 sons and 3 daughters. He had an additional 2 daughters with his second wife Mary Phebe Roseberry.

Participants in the Y-DNA Project represent Jacob Guthrie and Josephus ‘Cephas’ Franklin Guthrie’s lineages.

Descendants of Archibald Guthery & Rebecca Philips share a genetic mutation at DYS458 = 17 (Group Mode = 18). Two of the three have tested at the Y111 level and those also share a mutation at DYS710 = 35 (Group Mode = 36). These appear to be pattern markers for this Branch D line. However, they are not found in the Branch D line for John Guthery, which could be the deciding clue that debunks The Archibald Factor theory. These pattern markers could also have developed in the generation after their father, if Archibald Jr and John are indeed brothers, so while it is an important clue, it does not completely rule out close familial connection.

Limited participation amongst descendants with Autosomal DNA kits. So far only 1 additional kit. See above.

Note 1: Like all groups, GFG2A has a few other surname matches. They are rare for this group, and the number of Guthrie matches far outweighs the other names, which most likely means they possess Guthrie YDNA instead of the other way around. Men of the Tordiff and Roy surnames have joined the project in order to directly compare their YDNA to GFG2A. They also possess the DYS458 value of 17, share differences at DYS464a, c, d. The latter result is shared with Kit 231070, which is their closest genetic match to the group. They do not share the mutation at DYS710, but instead have the same value as the rest of GFG2A. These matches are probably due to an unknown Causal Event back in Scotland, first as a Guthrie-Roy event, and then here in North America as a Roy-Tordiff event. The Roys are primarily of Scot origin, while the Tordiff family is from England.

Note 2: Site coordinator also has an autosomal DNA match with a descendant of Archibald Guthrie & Elizabeth Lemley’s son Samuel Guthrie (1820-1903). Ann Guthrie is a GFG2A-Branch A descendant.
