A: Thomas Guthrie & Janet Doig

ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG3A BRANCH A

Thomas Guthrie (1600s-1700s) & Janet Doig
of Arbroath & Arbirlot, Angus, Scotland

There is a tentative paper trail reaching back from James Guthrie & Elizabeth Casdorph of Kawawha County, West Virginia to Andrew Guthrie & Mary Robertson of Angus, Scotland to David Guthrie & Jean Clerk of Angus, Scotland and to Thomas Guthrie & Janet Doig of Angus, Scotland. A Y-DNA test of a James & Elizabeth (Casdorph) Guthrie descendant matches GFG3A, so the group requires additional Y-DNA testing from other direct paternal line descendants of Thomas & Janet and/or these other couples in order to conclusively prove the generational connections.

If the link is proven, Thomas Guthrie and Janet Doig would be the earliest known ancestors for any of the lineages tied to Guthrie Family Group 3A. This could indicate that all family branches within the group descend from this couple or that Thomas Guthrie shares common direct paternal ancestry with those family lines.

Thomas Guthrie and Janet Doig married in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland on 22 Dec 1715. Their marriage record does not provide any additional clues as to the identities of their family members.

It is possible that Thomas Guthrie was also born in Angus, Scotland. Based on the marriage date of 1715, a rough estimation of 1675-1700 would make him 15-40 at the time of his marriage. There are 5 births/baptisms recorded in the Old Parish Records of Angus, Scotland for that time frame.

  1. 1689 – Lundie and Fowlis – Thomas, son of Thomas
  2. 1689 – Mains and Strathmartine – Thomas, son of Andrew Guthrie & Eleanor Maiden
  3. 1692 – Mains and Strathmartine – Thomas, son of Thomas Guthrie & Janet Morgone
  4. 1693 – Glamis – Thomas, son of Thomas Guthrie
  5. 1700 – Dundee – Thomas, son of James Guthrie & Christian Scott

Note that Potential Parents #5 can be ruled out. This is a genetically proven line matching GFG1A.
