ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG3A BRANCH C

William Guthrie c1771SCT – 1844SCT & Ann Hunter / Jacobina McClure
of Ayrshire, Scotland

William Guthrie’s family is one of two GFG3A branches that has direct ties to Scotland. This one has roots in Ayrshire; the other, Branch A, in Angus. There is currently no known historical documentation linking these two branches. Genetic testing reveals a share direct paternal line at some point in the past.

Although William Guthrie lived in Ayrshire all of his married life, it is not known if he was born there. His estimated DOB is 1771. This date is census based. William Guthrie is listed as aged 70 in the 1840 census of Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Using variant spellings, there are 13 William Guthrie births/baptism in the Old Parish Records of Ayrshire, Scotland 1748-1773. If the range is narrowed to 1770-1772 there is only 1 record, a William Guthrie, lawful son to John Guthrie in Muirhouse, baptized 9 Aug 1771. There are no records for the same period in Angus.

Ann Hunter was most likely the same age or younger than her husband William Guthrie, who would have been about 17 at the time of their marriage. If you review the Ayrshire OPR for Ann Hunter births/baptisms between 1769-1773, there are 4 options:
1. John Hunter & Isabelle MacFarlane on 13 Jul 1769 in Irvine
2. James Hunter & Jean McCulloch on 4 Deb 1771 in New Cumnock
3. Abraham Hunter & Janet Wallace on 7 Apr 1771 in Ardrossan
4. Joseph Hunter & Agnes Alexander on 16 Jun 1771 in Stevenston

Jacobina McClure was married to William Guthrie in 1803, If she was 20-40 at the time of her marriage, her birth range would be 1763-1783. There are 4 OPR Records for females of the name in Scotland, but only 1 within that birth range.
1. Robert McClure & Agnes Thomson on 7 Oct 1770 in Irvine

Both he and the autosomal kits have recent ties to Scotland and/or New Zealand, so it is likely that the most recent common ancestors between this branch and the other GFG3A branches is more distant.
