ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG4
Family Trees with roots in Colonial Virginia are often tangled with errors, assumptions, and lacking documentation. Consequently, Guthrie families that are genetically unrelated to one another are often found merged into one super-tree. Untangling the lines can be a challenge, especially when the supporting documentation is thin.
Thomas Guthrey is believed to be a descendant of the Guthrie family of King and Queen County, Virginia. Due to the close proximity to Middlesex County, Virginia, and to some documentation that places associated Guthries in that county, many researchers conclude that the K&Q Guthrie family is the same extended family as the one based in Middlesex, VA.
There are three key considerations:
1. John Guthrie (The Immigrant) of K&Q was reportedly of English origin.
2. There is no documentation proving any direct familial connection.
3. The Y-DNA of Thomas Guthrey’s line does not match the Middlesex group.
John Guthrie was reportedly born about 1620 in England. One tradition says that he received a land grant from King Charles. He owned land in Isle of Wight County, and later Gloucester County, which became King & Queen County, Virginia. His sons are believed to be John Guthrie, Edward Guthrie, James Guthrie, and Daniel Guthrie, all of King & Queen County.
Edward Guthrie is listed as a probable father to Thomas Guthrey, William Guthrie, and Lawrence (or Henry) Guthrie of Cumberland County, Virginia.
Unfortunately, the proof of such connections may never be known due to 3 separate courthouse fires in 1828, 1833, and 1863.
All participants in the Guthrie DNA Project with matching Y-DNA can be traced with reasonable certainty directly back to Thomas Guthrey. If they do descend from one of these potentially collateral lines, there is no proof at this time.

SUSANNAH GUTHREY
1717VA-1824KY
Susannah Guthrey was born about 1736 in King William County, VA. Online trees give her the middle name of King, but I have found no original source data showing her with that name.
She married Robert Moore. I have 2 unsourced dates. 1754, which seems to be an estimate based on the eldest child’s 1756 birth. The other is 8 Jan 1759, both of them being in Cumberland County, VA.
Upon her father’s death in 1800, Susannah received her father’s large bible and the loan of two slaves named Violet and Phyllis until the time of her death. The slaves and their increase were to then pass on to Susannah’s children.
Sometime after that date Robert & Susannah moved to Green County, Kentucky. Robert died there in 1808. Susannah (Guthrey) Moore died there on 3 Jun 1824.

ALEXANDER KING GUTHREY
1738VA-1817VA
Alexander King Guthrey was born about 1738 in St David’s Parish, King William, VA. He purchased 298 acres in St Thomas Parish on 19 Feb 1759, likely about the time of his marriage to Sarah, whose maiden name is possibly Coleman. About 1765 Alexander and Sarah conveyed land in King William County to Henry Oaks for 5 shillings, and afterward appear to have moved to Cumberland County, Virginia taking Alexander’s grandmother, Elizabeth Oaks, with them. Sometime after the move, Alexander’s wife Sarah died. He remarried in 1776 to widow Mary Pearce nee Anderson. Alexander died in Littleton Parish, Cumberland, VA in 1817. His widow Mary lived until 7 Nov 1836. They are buried at the James Anderson Family Cemetery in Farmville, Cumberland, VA.

TRAVIS FRANCIS GUTHREY
1742VA-1818VA
Travis Francis Guthrey was born about 1742 in King William County, VA. He married Mary Ann Hill. The date listed for this couple’s marriage is 1759, but the eldest child’s DOB is not until about 1771, so there is something wrong about those dates.
Travis moved his family to Halifax County, Virginia sometime before 1773 when he was mentioned as an adjoining landowner in a property record dated 15 April 1773. There are a number of property purchases and sales in Halifax County, VA until Travis’ death in 1818.

HENRY GUTHREY
1745VA-1808VA
Henry Guthrey was born about 1745 in King William County, Virginia. He purchased land in Cumberland County, Virginia in 1779, so was there by that date. Like his father and brothers, Henry was a slave owner as noted in Virginia Census records. His wife was named Patsy (MNU). Henry died in 1808. There are estate and Chancery Court records in the Cumberland, VA files through 1815.
This man is often misidentified as Henry Guthrie who married Nancy Shackleford. That line has been genetically matched to GFG5, and is not a descendant lineage of Thomas Guthrey and Sarah Oakes.

ELIZABETH GUTHREY
1746VA-1823VA
Elizabeth Guthrey’s DOB is listed as 10 June 1746. This date is sourced from the Hunter-Morris Family Bible (see Gallery) Her listed birth location in Louisa County, Virginia seems up for questioning. Her parents, to my knowledge, never lived there. She married David Morris about 1768, apparently an estimated date based on the DOB of their eldest child. Elizabeth died in Louisa County, Virginia on 28 Jun 1823, and David Morris died there 31 Dec 1831. All indications on census records and David’s will suggest that his wife Elizabeth did indeed die before he did.

WILLIAM GUTHREY
1751VA-1826VA
William Guthrey was born on 16 August 1751 at Flint Hill, King William, VA. He was married to Rebecca Noel on 25 November 1778 in Buckingham, VA. He was a slave owner, and also owned property in Cumberland County, VA where he lived until his death in 1826. Rebecca survived him. She died in 1836. Probate data includes an estate inventory and Chancery Court records.

They were living in Fayette County, KY in 1790, Harrison, KY in 1800, Henry, KY in 1810, Oldham KY in 1830. Sally died at Corn Creek, Trimble, KY on 27 Jun 1825 and is buried at the Corn Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at Milton. Her husband Rev Benjamin Coleman died on 13 Sep 1834 in Trimble, KY.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
About 1717: BIRTH of THOMAS GUTHREY
Colonial Virginia
Thomas Guthrey is believed to be a son of Edward Guthrey of King & Queen County, Virginia. Unfortunately, there are no documents to prove it or to conclusively identify the lineages of his other siblings for comparative DNA testing.
Although we cannot prove the identity of his parents, it is within our scope to state without doubt that Thomas Guthrey’s father was not John Guthery of Middlesex County, Virginia. The Y-DNA of descendants does not match. They share different genetic paternal origins. Not only do they not match in a recent genealogical timeframe, but their ancient human genetics originate with different Haplogroups.
About 1718: BIRTH of SARAH OAKES
This is an estimated date of birth for a woman who could represent more than one individual. According to various traditions published and found across the intranet, Thomas Guthrey may have been married twice. Or not.
Find a Grave indicates that Sarah Oakes was the daughter of John Oakes III and wife Rachel Rawlings listing a DOB of 1718 in St John’s Parish, King William, VA. Sources?
Thomas’ son Alexander King Guthrey mentioned his grandmother was named Elizabeth Oakes. So where does she come in?
Trees have listed an (Unidentified) King and Sarah Oakes as Thomas’ two spouses, but there is no evidence of a King marriage despite the use of King as a middle name for Alexander.
So, Sarah’s identity is a bit of a mystery, but she will be referred to here as the mother of all of Thomas Guthrey’s children pending other evidence.
About 1735: MARRIAGE of THOMAS GUTHERY & SARAH OAKES
Colonial Virginia
If Thomas was married just the one time, he and Sarah were probably wed about 1735, a year before the birth of their first child.
1736: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SUSANNAH GUTHREY
King William County, Virginia
Susannah is frequently listed online as Susannah King Guthrey, but I have not yet found any original document listing her with a middle name.
1738: BIRTH of SON – ALEXANDER KING GUTHREY
King William County, Virginia
Unlike his sister Susannah, Alexander’s middle name of King is documented in a property record.
On 19 Feb 1759 he is identified as “Alexander King Guttery of St David’s Parish” when he purchased 298 acres in St Thomas Parish in King William.
1742: BIRTH of SON – TRAVIS FRANCIS GUTHREY
King William County, Virginia
1745: BIRTH of SON – HENRY GUTHREY
King William County, Virginia
1746: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH GUTHREY
King William County, Virginia on 10 June 1746
Elizabeth Guthrey’s DOB is recorded in the Hunter-Morris Bible Family Record of her husband David Morris’ family. Trees list her birthplace as Louisa County, Virginia, which is where the Morris’ lived after their Cumberland, Virginia marriage. However, I do not believe that Elizabeth was born in Louisa. Her parents never lived there as far as I know. It is more likely that her birthplace was in King William County, Virginia as they were living there before Thomas leased property in Cumberland County in Feb 1750.
1750: PROPERTY LEASE
Cumberland County, Virginia on 20 February 1750
Thos. Harvey and Elizabeth his wife of Cumberland Co, in Southam Parish, planter, for 5shillings, lease unto Thomas Guttery, of King Wm Co, in St John parish, planter, a tract in Cumberland Co Southam parish, containing 400acres. Deeds: Liber 1 Folio 292.
This seems like a great deal unless leases normally went for only 5 shillings. Were the Harveys somehow related? It may have been a way to hold the property until he could officially purchase it, which he did 3 days later.
1750: PROPERTY PURCHASE
Cumberland County, Virginia on 23 February 1750
For 100 pounds current money of Virginia, Thomas Guttery, purchased the 400 acres on Pidy branch which he had leased on the 20 Feb 1750. Deeds, Liber 1, folio 289.
1751: PROPERTY PURCHASE
Cumberland County, Virginia
Bought 400 acres of land. Later acquired a 260 acre plantation on “Flint Hill”, on a branch of the Willis River in Cumberland County.
1751: BIRTH of SON – WILLIAM GUTHREY
Colonial Virginia on 16 August 1751
Maybe the new residence in Cumberland County was not yet ready because family tradition states that William Guthrey was born at Flint Hill, King William, Virginia.
1752: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SARAH ‘SALLY’ GUTHREY
Cumberland County, Virginia on 10 May 1752
1754 (or 1759): MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – SUSANNAH GUTHREY
Cumberland County, Virginia
Susannah may have married Robert Moore about 1754 or on 8 Jan 1759. They were parents to Elizabeth, William, Thomas Guthrie, Lucy, Nancy Sarah, Richard, John G, and Travis Samuel. Upon her father’s death, Susannah inherited her father’s large bible, and the loan of 2 slaves: Violet and Phyllis. Her children were to inherit them, their increase, and/or their worth after Susannah’s death
About 1759: BIRTH of SON – JOHN GUTHREY
Cumberland County, Virginia
About 1759: MARRIAGE of SON – ALEXANDER KING GUTHREY
King William County, Virginia, presumably
Alexander King Guthrey married Sarah (MNU). Her surname was possibly Coleman. They were parents to: Benjamin, Alexander Iverson, Sarah, Susannah, Elizabeth, and Hannah.
About 1759: MARRIAGE of SON – TRAVIS FRANCIS GUTHREY
King William County, Virginia, presumably
I’m not sure about this date. It was listed for the marriage of Travis Guthrey and Mary Ann Hill, however their first child was not born until about 1771.
1759: PROPERTY PURCHASE
Cumberland County, Virginia on 27 August 1759
James Brown conveys by deed 86 acres on Pidy Creek to Thos. Guttey. Deeds, liber 2, folio 519.
1766: PROPERTY PURCHASE
Cumberland County, Virginia on 21 July 1766
Robert Kent and wife Mary for 100 pounds sells to Thos Guttery a tract on both sides of Pidy Creek of Willis River containing 260 acres. Deeds, liber 4, folio 86.
1766: PROPERTY SALE
Cumberland County, Virginia on 28 July 1766
Thos. Guttrey sells to James Southall of James City Co. VA for 225 pounds, 2 tracts of adj land on North fork of Pidy Creek of Willis river, 3000 acres, part of tract surveys to Daniel Terry 10 june 1737, whereon Thos Guttery now lives, and add’l 86 acres
Verify: 300 or 3000?
After 1766: DEATH of WIFE – SARAH (OAKES) GUTHREY
Location Unknown, presumably Virginia
The last mention of Sarah Guthrey, wife of Thomas, is found in 1766 when she makes an appearance in court to declare her relinquishment of dower rights to land that her husband has sold. She is not mentioned in Thomas Guthrey’s will.
About 1768: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH GUTHREY
Cumberland County, Virginia, USA
Elizabeth Guthrey married David Morris about 1768.

Findings:
The Y-DNA participants for this group include 5 men of the Guthrie surname, 1 of the White surname whose ancestral line is known to be Guthrie, and 1 of the Key surname whose Y-DNA appears to be that of GFG4 origin. The latter is the only one who has tested at the Y111 level to date. A few of the kits show random/recent genetic changes compared to the Group Mode Result, but no pattern markers to determine whether one line is closer to the others. There is also one Guthrie match to a man with a Big-Y test who has not joined the project, exact lineage is unknown.
Guthrie Family Group 4 does not match the genetic profiles for any of the other Guthrie Family Groups. Most if not all of the lineages can be traced back to Thomas Guthrey, or at least to the same region in Virginia that Thomas Guthrey lived.
It is possible that the extended ancestry of Thomas Guthrey also matches this genetic profile, and he is genetically part of a historical group of Guthrie men who trace their ancestry back to England and/or Scotland. However, it is also possible that Thomas Guthrey is the first of a line of Guthrey men in Virginia with ‘other’ Y-DNA due to some causal event such as adoption or false paternity.
this is very informative and you have done a lot of research. I am descended from Thomas Guthrie Moore-Henry Moore-Parthena Moore Livingston-Willilam Livingston-Margaret Livngston Russell-Charles Russell Sr-Charles Russell Jr- and me. I had dna test from Ancestry done a couple of months ago. Thank you for sharing!! Jeff Russell, Clinton, Indiana

Re: Henry Guthrey (b ca1745)
Can anyone tell me what evidence there is for a birth year around 1745, and not, say, a decade later? Someone must have made an educated guess, but I can’t tell based on what.

Henry Guthrey, son of Thomas Guthrey of GFG4, is listed with an estimated DOB of about 1745. Definitely possible that he was born in the 1750s. The DOB range for Thomas Guthrey’s children is about 1736-about 1759. None of the records I have for him reveal a specific age. I don’t have any in-depth research on Henry’s family. There are Chancery Records for his estate: Bernard Guthry v Children of Henry Guthry, which give me the impression that Henry had older children and that Patsy may be a younger wife with a few younger children. The only potential clue I see is the order in which the sons of Thomas Guthrey are identified in his will. Henry is named after Francis and before William. The latter has a known DOB of 16 Aug 1751. Not a certainty, but that could be where the estimate originated. There is also a lot of confusion by people who have misidentified the Henry Guthrey of GFG4 as the Henry Guthrie (b1754) of GFG5 who married Nancy Shackleford.
