ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG5 BRANCH A

This Colonial Virginia Guthrie family is yet another one frequently and erroneously linked to the Middlesex, VA line. When the truth is not immediately forthcoming, people tend to latch onto a close substitute, so that appears to be the case in many online trees. There is no genetic relationship between this William Guthrie and the family of John Guthrie of Middlesex, VA, nor is there any documentation linking this man to that family.

Instead, William Guthrie’s origin story connects him to Hanover County, Virginia where his son Henry C Guthrie stated he was born.

There are 2 potential options for earlier generations. One has little chance of being genetically proven due to a lack of documented lineage. The other has a great chance of having living male Guthries if one of them will step up to the plate for participation in our Y-DNA project.

The first option is that William is potentially a son of Edward Guthrey of King and Queen County, Virginia. That would potentially make him the brother of Thomas Guthrey (GFG4) and Lawrence/Henry Guthrey (GFG Unknown). Thomas’ line is most likely a genetic mismatch. However, if it is representative of the rest of the Guthries presumed to be related to him, then William Guthrie of GFG5 is not related to that bunch. Thomas’ own relationship with them is simply theoretical at this point, too.

The second option plays off of a recent Y-DNA match to GFG5, but it’s not as clear cut as most. This individual descends from 2 Guthrie ancestors. The direct paternal line, which is the GFG5 match, has no known ancestors beyond that Guthrie-Guthrie marriage. The female side of the line can trace its lineage back several generations to a family that still needs Y-DNA representation: Descendants of Daniel Guthrie & Mary Little. The Guthrie family of Carteret County, NC is expansive and they frequently intermarried with cousins. This tendency suggests that the Guthrie-Guthrie marriage could reflect the same situation, which would infer that the Carteret, NC Guthrie families also belong to GFG5. That’s a huge leap, however, when there appear to be plenty of Guthrie descendants who could solve the mystery. See GFG5 Branch E – James C Guthrie & Caroline Guthrie.

CHILDREN:

HENRY C GUTHRIE
1754VA-1837TN

Henry Guthrie’s Revolutionary War Pension Application record reveals his date and place of birth. He was born on 10 December 1754 in Hanover County, Virginia. There is some thought that brother John might have been his twin, but I don’t believe that has been proven in records.

Henry served as a soldier during the American Revolution. 1774-1775, he served in a company commanded by Capt Samuel Weldon and later Capt Nathan Turner. From May or June 1776 Henry served 12 months in the armory by order of the Quartermaster General Nicholas Long. He also served a couple of terms as a substitute soldier for other men. One of these stints was for his uncle, Levi Guthrie, who had apparently been drafted. This notation is important because it establishes that his father William had a brother named Levi. Henry was wounded on the top of the head by a sword in the hand of a British officer, held 8 days, and then paroled.

In 1789, Henry Guthrie went with his father to Kentucky and lived in Lexington until 1799 when he removed to Nashville, Tennessee. Henry married Nancy Ann Shackleford in Lexington on 24 Nov 1796. They raised a large family there. Henry died on 14 Jan 1837 and is buried in the Guthrie Family Cemetery in Davidson County, Tennessee.

JOHN GUTHRIE
c1757VA-1821NC

According to tradition John Guthrie may have been a twin to Henry Guthrie. If so, their shared DOB would be 10 Dec 1754 in Hanover County, Virginia. John’s story is similar to that of his brother in that it unfolds in the pension application for his Revolutionary War Service pension.

Between 1777-1780, he worked in an armory. Although he enlisted in the regular Army in 1779 under Nicholas Long and Gen. Sumner, he was placed in the military armory due to his experience. He worked in the armory and was sent out as a spy against the Tories. While guarding public property by order of Col. Long, John Guthrie was shot and severely wounded.

John Guthrie married Anna Smith about 1775, probably in Halifax, NC. He purchased land there in 1782 and 1783, but sold it to his father-in-law, Peter Smith prior to moving to Georgia where he lived on Brier Creek in Warren County. In 1801, he purchased lots of land containing 200 acres along the interestingly named, Shitbreeches Creek in Buncombe County, NC. He sold this land in 1802 and moved elsewhere in Buncombe County, NC. He died there 4 Sep 1821 and is buried at Jupiter Cemetery.

Children: 8
Sons: Jonathan Guthrie, Andrew Guthrie, Abner Guthrie, Shadrack Guthrie, Gabriel Guthrie
Daughters: Delilah Guthrie, Barsheba Guthrie, Sarah Guthrie

REUBEN GUTHRIE
1759VA-1816KY

I know very little about Reuben Guthrie, and the data I find for him online appears to be mixed up with descendants from a different Guthrie Family Group (GFG8). Reuben reportedly married twice, although I am not completely convinced that either marriage should be attributed to this Reuben Guthrie.

By 1786, this man was already ensconced in Kentucky living in Fayette County. Yet an 1805 marriage of a Reuben Guthrie to Susannah Holland occurred in Rutherford, NC, and a 1814 marriage to Elizabeth Everett in Bedford, Virginia. According to an 1816 Power of Attorney between Jesse Guthrie and his brother-in-law Benjamin Batterton allowing him to act on behalf of Reuben Guthrie’s heirs, Reuben may have had children. Use of the term ‘heirs’ could simply mean anyone inheriting his estate, not necessarily his own children. (Bourbon KY Deed Book M-712).

Does this Power of Attorney name Reuben’s family? or are there any other documents naming his wife or wives and children?

Children: Unknown

SAMUEL GUTHRIE
1761VA-Unknown

Nothing is known about Samuel Guthrie.

PETER GUTHRIE
1763VA-1805KY

Peter Guthrie was born in Hanover County, Virginia about 1763. He moved to Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky with his parents about 1789. He owned property there and purchased a lot fronting Main Street in 1799. He died between 1803-1805. Probate: 11 Oct 1805. Heirs of Peter Guthrie, dec’d of Madison Co. sold lot No. 36 for $1000 to James Hawthorn of Fayette Co. Reuben Guthrie, attorney for grantors.

JESSE GUTHRIE
1765-Unknown (After 1820)

Jesse Guthrie was born about 1765 in Hanover County, Virginia. He moved with the family to Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky about 1789. He was noted to be a Methodist (1794). In 1796, the Kentucky Gazette published, “Jesse Guthrie and Benjamin Batterton want to buy old copper, brass and pewter, and they have a brass founder who will cast still cocks, and rivets, mill inks, spoon molds and mountains.” Batterton was his brother-in-law. The business may not have been profitable, for Jesse Guthrie became one of Kentucky’s early school teachers. He was the author of ‘The American Schoolmaster’s Assistant’, also known as ‘Guthrie’s Arithmetic’, which was published in Lexington, KY in 1804. About 1798, he married a woman named Priscilla (MNU). He was listed in the Harrison County, Kentucky censuses of 1810 and 1820. According to those records, Jesse & Priscilla were parents to 7 children. His death reportedly occurred in Harrison County, date unknown.

Sons: William Guthrie, 2 other sons
Daughters: Mary ‘Polly’ Guthrie, 3 other daughters

SUSANNAH GUTHRIE
1767VA/NC-1852KY

Susannah Guthrie was born on 27 Sep 1767, presumably in Hanover County, Virginia or Halifax County, North Carolina. She married on 11 March 1790 in Bourbon County, Kentucky to Benjamin Batterton. About 1796, Benjamin was in business with her brother Jesse (see above). Her husband died in KY on 29 Jun 1833. Susannah’s death record states that she died of Old Age on 11 May 1852. She was 84.

MARY GUTHRIE
1769NC-Unknown

Mary Guthrie was born about 1769 in Halifax County, NC. She married George Marshall sometime prior to 1792. Their daughter, Elizabeth Marshall, was born in Kentucky on 9 March 1792. This is the extent of what I have found about Mary and her family.

Children: 1 (There could be others)
Marshall Sons: None Known
Marshall Daughters: Elizabeth Marshall

ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
1773NC-Unknown, possibly KY

Elizabeth Guthrie was born about 1773 in Halifax County, Virginia. The same year is given for sister Anna, so it is possible they were twins, however it is an estimated year. Elizabeth married Jesse Thomas in Madison, Kentucky on 14 August 1806. The 1810 census lists the Jesse Thomas household with 6 children: 2M/1F 16-25, 2F 10-15, 1M under 10. If Jesse and Elizabeth were married 4 years earlier, the only child in the census that could be theirs would be the 1 male under 10. Online trees indicate that Jesse Thomas was previously married 15 Feb 1781 in Goochland, VA to Jane Bowles. Census records suggest Elizabeth had died by 1830.

Children: 1 (There might be more)
Sons: 1 unidentified
Daughters: Unknown

ANNA GUTHRIE
1773NC-Unknown, possibly KY

Anna, also seen listed as Nancy, was born 7 April 1773 in Halifax County, North Carolina. She was with the family during the move to Kentucky about 1789. She married Henry Batterton in Madison County, Kentucky on 23 an 1794 and was the mother of the majority of his children. Some online trees list her DOD as 1805, but there are no records found to substantiate it. These trees also list Anna as the mother of children born through 1813. Then there is a 7 year gap before the last 2 children, Granville and Mary Jane. There also seems to be confusion about the identity of Henry’s second wife. Her name was Susannah (MNU). Henry’s son, Henry Guthrie, married a Susannah Anderson in 1848, years after the death of his father. Various trees and the Find-a-Grave site list Henry’s wife Susannah with the same maiden name, Anderson. Was she also an Anderson, or is this an error?

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1722: BIRTH of WILLIAM GUTHRIE

William Guthrie was most likely born in Virginia. The birth date of 1722 is possibly an estimate, and the location of Hanover County, Virginia is inferred from the Revolutionary War Pension application of his son Henry Guthrie who stated that he was born in that county.

The parents of William Guthrie are unknown. There are no genetic clues at this time pointing toward any earlier couple within GFG5, although there may be a connection to the Guthrie family of Carteret County, NC, which goes back to Daniel Guthrie c1690-After1753NC & Mary Little.

Some speculate that William’s parents were David Guthrie and Susannah Thurston who married 11 Oct 1723 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia. There are no other documents found for David in that county, and there is no evidence of David being tied to the GFG1A line from that county, which leaves this theory open as a possibility. The middle name of Thurston was given to one of William’s granddaughters, the daughter of Henry C. Guthrie, Eleanor Thurston Guthrie.

1734: BIRTH of ELEANOR HARRIS

Eleanor was born in Virginia about 1734. A fieldstone lists her as age 82 at her death in 1816.

Eleanor was the daughter of Peter Harris, who was living in King William Parish, Cumberland, Virginia at the time of his death in 1775 naming William, Eleanor, and two of his Guttery grandchildren in the will. Peter Guttery is likely his namesake. The other grandchild named was Mary Guttery, possibly a namesake for his wife.

1752: MARRIAGE of WILLIAM GUTHRIE & ELEANOR HARRIS ABBOTT
Hanover County, Virginia, USA

This date would make Eleanor about 18 at the time of her marriage to William. There is no data found on her marriage to anyone by the Abbott surname. Could that name be an error, or was there really a Mr Abbott? If so, the marriage was likely a short one.

1754: BIRTH of SON – HENRY C GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

Henry was born on 10 Dec 1754 in Hanover County, VA. He listed this place in his Revolutionary War Pension Application. There is some talk about whether he was a twin to John Guthrie, whose estimated DOB is listed here as 1757. No proof found.

1757: BIRTH of SON – JOHN GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

This is an estimated birthdate for John Guthrie. Some say he might have been a twin to Henry C Guthrie, whose known DOB was 10 Dec 1754. No proof found.

1759: BIRTH of SON – REUBEN GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1761: BIRTH of SON – SAMUEL GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1763: BIRTH of SON – PETER GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1765: BIRTH of SON – JESSE GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1766: REMOVED to HALIFAX COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Documents reveal that the family lived in Halifax, NC until after the American Revolution.

1767: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SUSANNAH GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia or Halifax County, North Carolina

Susannah Guthrie was born about the time that the family was moving from Virginia to North Carolina. Although trees primarily list Virginia, her birth on 27 Sep 1767 more likely would have occurred in NC according to the timeline her older brother Henry gave about the family’s move to NC.

1768: PROBATE (WITNESS)
Halifax County, North Carolina on 19 April 1768

William Guthrie was a witness to the Last Will & Testament of William Bennett. (Halifax Will Book).

1769: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARY GUTHRIE
Halifax County, North Carolina

1770: PROPERTY PURCHASE
Halifax County, North Carolina, USA on 6 March 1770

Sherwood Grimsey of Dobbs Co to William Guthrie of Cumberland Co, Va – 100 pds Virginia money, 300 acres adj Burnett, Rocky Branch, Thomas Gill, Gum Branch, Martin. Signed by Sherwood Grimsley and Ann Grimsley.

Note that this entry indicates William Guthrie was from Cumberland County, Virginia perhaps showing that the family had lived there for a time prior to moving further south to North Carolina. Cumberland is a common location for GFG4 descendants of Thomas Guthrey, whose numbers do include a William Guthrie.

1773: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
Halifax County, North Carolina

There is speculation based on the 1773 estimate whether Elizabeth was a twin of Anna.

1773: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ANNA GUTHRIE
Halifax County, Virginia on 7 April 1773

1775: DEATH of FATHER-in-LAW – PETER HARRIS
King William Parish, Cumberland, Virginia, USA

The Will of Peter Harris of King William Parish dated 15 Feb 1771, probated 28 Aug 1775, names daughter Eleanor and her husband William Guttery, and grandchildren Mary and Peter Guttery.

“When Peter Harris died…his son Henry challenged his father’s last will as made while incompetent.” Peter Harris did not wait until he died to distribute shares of estate. Daughters inheritance given directly to children. Read about the legal battle surrounding Peter Harris’ will in ‘Inheritance and Wealth in America‘ by Robert K Miller and Stephen J McNamee.

Note that Peter Harris was living in Cumberland, VA, too.

About 1775: MARRIAGE of SON – JOHN GUTHRIE
Unknown location, possibly NC or GA

John Guthrie married Anna Smith, presumably before the birth of their eldest child around 1776-1780.

1796: MARRIAGE OF SON – HENRY C GUTHRIE

Eleanor is buried at the Batterton Cemetery in Paris, Bourbon, Kentucky. She was 82 years old.

MISTAKEN IDENTITIES

William Guthrie is frequently found listed as a descendant of GFG1A’s John Guthrie and Elizabeth Baskett. These two families are genetically unrelated.

Descendants are also searching for information on Eleanor Harris Abbott. As we know, she was born in Virginia and was the daughter of Peter Harris. However, the Abbott connection suggests that she was previously married to a man by that surname prior to marrying William Guthrie. Some trees erroneously list her as an Abbott by birth and include her as being a member of the Abbottstown, PA family. One GFG5 researcher has found evidence to counteract that supposition. A book entitled, A History of Abbottstown, by Willis W Eisenhart (1953) reveals details on the family of the founder, John Abbott, who indeed had a daughter named Elinor. However, that daughter married James Mackey and they resided in Pennsylvania for the remainder of their lives. The Abbott marital connection for GFG5’s ancestor remains unidentified.

Findings:

Y-DNA Kit 157554 is currently a Y37 marker test showing Group Mode DNA results 37/37 for Guthrie Family Group 5.

The other kits for the group show a few unique mutations that do not appear to be inherited pattern markers.

Guthrie Family Group 5 does not match any of the other group profiles, so it has its own direct paternal ancestry. We need Y-DNA from the Carteret, NC line to determine if they are a match.
