G: Henry Guthrie & Manerva Lyon

ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG5 BRANCH G

Henry Guthrie 1812GA-1855GA & Minerva Lyon
of Newton & Cobb Counties, Georgia, USA

Census records reveal that Henry Guthrie was born in Georgia and appears to have spent his entire life in that state. No known parents. I also find no specific origin theory for Henry Guthrie. By estimated DOB, he was born about 13 years after James C Guthrie of GFG5 Branch D, who was also born in Georgia. Possible that these two men could share a father, or be closely linked through a common grandparents.

THE GUTHRIE DNA PROJECT

Guthrie Family Group: GFG5
Group Designation: Branch G – (The Guthries of Newton & Cobb County, Georgia)

Haplogroup: R-M269
Confirmed Haplogroup: R-M269

YDNA Matches: 1
Kit 20261
Henry Guthrie/Manerva Lyon > William Franklin Guthrie/Caroline Julia Bailey (GGP)

Family Finder / Autosomal DNA Kits:
None

Findings:

Participant 20261 matches the Y-DNA profile of GFG5. This is a Y37 marker kit. He has 1 unique genetic mutation compared to group mode results, so is 36/37 with the most common values found at any given genetic marker. It is found on a ‘fast moving marker’ which probably indicates recent and/or a random change rather than a sign of an inherited genetic change in the DNA. The volume of tests for the group as a whole does not currently help establish an assessment of pattern markers.

SANFORD WILBURN GUTHRIE
1842GA – 1927AL

There is a discrepancy regarding Sanford Wilburn Guthrie’s exact DOB. He listed his birthdate as 8 May 1843. A letter read by Clara Ellis Kelton at the United Daughters of the Confederacy meeting Dec 1925 indicates that he was born in Covington, Newton, Georgia on 18 May 1842.

As a boy, Sanford lived in Roswell, Cobb County, Georgia. In May 1861, he enlisted in the 7th Georgia Regiment as a private in Company H under Captain King. He continued to serve until he was captured in Virginia in the aftermath of the Battle of the Wilderness aka the Seven Days Battle, and carried to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland, where he remained for 4 months. Next transferred to Elmyra NY where he became sick and was given 60 days leave. The war ended while he was at home.

Note that census records list him as Sanford and Samuel or Sam Guthrie. “His numerous friends called him Uncle Sam. Mr Guthrie once ran all kinds of country machinery, including an old time carder on a branch of the Warrior River near Rosa.”

Sanford married Mary E (Albritton) Paden about 1873. They lived in Blount County, Alabama. Mary’s first marriage produced 2 sons, listed with her in the 1870 and 1880 censuses: William, 14, and John, 11. After Mary’s death, Sam remarried to Nellie J (Brown) Barnes. He lists his children as Ida, Eddie, and Ellis. The latter presumably died young as he is not in any of the census records, and not listed as a living child in the pension application records. During his latter years, Sanford was a hotel proprietor in Oneonta, Blount, Alabama.

Children: 3
Sons: Samuel Edward ‘Eddie’ Guthrie, Ellis Guthrie
Daughters: Ida Guthrie

MARY JANE GUTHRIE
1844GA – 1902AL

Mary Jane Guthrie was born on 24 Aug 1845 in Georgia. She was 10 when her father, Henry Guthrie, died. Enumerated with her mother and siblings in Cobb County, Georgia in 1860. I do not have definitive proof that she is the Mary Jane Guthrie who married Marion Nation in Blount County, AL in 1869, but some of her family had moved there by that date, so it is a logical choice. Marion Nation was a farmer. Mary Jane died on 1 April 1902 and is buried at Antioch Baptist Cemetery.

Marion, being 4-5 years younger than Mary Jane, survived her by 15 years. He remarried to Pauline Elizabeth ‘Lena’ Martin. Marion died on 9 February 1927 and is also buried at Antioch Baptist Cemetery.

JOSEPHUS P GUTHRIE
1846GA – 1923AL

This man’s name appears in multiple forms online. His gravestone lists him as J P Guthrie, and the name Josephus P Guthrie is frequently used. I have also seen him listed as Josephus C Guthrie. One tree lists him as Josephus Cleatius Guthrie, that middle name does not appear to be documented with a source. The name Josephus is frequently found shortened to Cephus, which might explain the use of the initial C. Census records do seem to indicate that this was one individual rather than an amalgamation of data on two different men.

Josephus Guthrie was born about 1846 in Roswell, Georgia.

On 3 July 1861, he enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company G of the 11th Regiment of Georgia infantry. He was promoted on 15 September to acting brigade quartermaster at Centerville, Virginia. Josephus received a gunshot wound in the left leg on 8 Jun 1864 and was hospitalized at Jackson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, and returned to duty 8 days later. He was mustered out at Appomattox on 9 April 1865.

Josephus Guthrie married Mary Clarissa ‘Clara’ Russell in Marshall County, Alabama on 17 December 1871. He worked as a Boot and Shoemaker, a trade that seems to be consistent with this family. They were parents to 3 children: Betty Leona Guthrie, Annie Laura Guthrie, and Algie Guthrie.

Algie is the child that connects Josephus to his two families. Algie’s death records indicate that his parents were Josephus Guthrie and Mary Russell. Algie is also found living with Josephus and Josephine during the 1900 census in Friendship, Marshall, Alabama.

Josephus Guthrie married Josephine ‘Josie’ P Street on 22 Mar 1888 in Dade County, Georgia. Their children were: Donnie/Johnnie Guthrie, Pauline Guthrie, Mary E Guthrie, Hubert Guthrie, Julius Herman Guthrie, and Thyra Guthrie. The family moved to Tennessee for a time. Josie died in Chattanooga on 7 Sep 1920, and was buried in Alabama. Josephus moved back to Alabama. He died there on 25 April 1923 in Oneonta, Blount, Alabama and is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Confirmation of the familial connections could be made through genetic tests, preferably the Y-DNA of descendants of Algie, Hubert, and Julius Herman.

Sons: Algie Guthrie, Hubert Guthrie, Julius Herman Guthrie
Daughters: Betty Leona Guthrie, Annie Laura Guthrie, Donnie/Johnnie Guthrie, Pauline Guthrie, Mary E Guthrie, Thyra Guthrie

BENJAMIN F GUTHRIE
1848 – Before 1860

Benjamin F Guthrie was born in Georgia about 1848. He is listed as a 2 year old on the 1850 census of Roswell, Cobb County, Georgia. He is not listed with his widowed mother, Manerva (Lyon) Guthrie and siblings in the 1860 census, so it is presumed that he died during childhood.

WILLIAM FRANKLIN GUTHRIE
1849GA – 1910AL

William Franklin Guthrie was born in May of 1849 in Georgia. He was only 1 at the time of the 1850 census when the family was listed in District 31 of Forsyth County, Georgia. His father died when William was just a boy. He moved along with most of the family to Blount County, Alabama. It was there that he married Caroline Julia Bailey on 22 February 1874 when he was about 24 years of age. They moved to Cullman County, Alabama by 1880 where he worked as a farmer.

ZACHARIAH GUTHRIE
1851GA – 1912GA

Many trees do not list Zachariah or his sister Frances as children of Henry Guthrie & Manerva Lyon, but both are found in the 1860 census with the widow and her other children.

There is a Zachariah T Guthrie in the records born about 1854 in Georgia who married Susan L Alexander. He was living in Heard County, Georgia in 1880 and working as a shoemaker, an occupation frequently found in this particular family. I believe that this man is Henry & Manerva’s son. Check out the original census record rather than the transcript as there is an obvious error in the transcription, which lists Z T Guthrie as a son of M D Akins. In actuality, the original record is a listing of the Alexander household. M D Akins it the 71 year old mother of the Head of Household. Z T Guthrie is listed as a hired laborer, a shoemaker. His future wife, Susan is a daughter of the household.

Y-DNA from a descendant of son Albert Walton Guthrie can confirm a GFG5 match.

Daughters: Annie Lee Guthrie, Mary M Guthrie

FRANCES GUTHRIE
1854GA – Unknown

Frances Guthrie is listed as a daughter of the widowed Manerva Guthrie in the 1860 census of Cobb County, Georgia, and is presumably the last child of Henry Guthrie who died in 1855. I cannot find Manerva or Frances listed in the 1870 census. Unknown if Frances died during childhood, or if she grew to adulthood and married.
