ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG6 – BRANCH D
John Guthrie was in York, Ontario, Canada by the Spring of 1822 when he married Isabella Stinson. There are no comprehensive ships passenger lists of immigrants arriving in Canada prior to 1855. Until then, shipping companies were not required by the government to keep their passenger manifests. As a consequence, we do not have information on John Guthrie’s arrival in Canada from Ireland.
Was John Guthrie a direct arrival in Canada or did he come through one of the American ports and travel north? Was he alone or did he travel with someone? Did he have other family in the area?
In 1785, the British began the settlement of York, now Toronto. Until 1790, Ontario was a part of the Province of Quebec. The Constitutional Act of 1791 established Upper Canada. The population grew from about 6,000 in 1785 to 46,000 in 1806. Upper Canada was the chief target of the Americans during the War of 1812 (1812-1814). It is unknown if John Guthrie was already in Upper Canada at the time of the war or if he arrived after its end.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
1791: BIRTH of JOHN GUTHRIE
Ireland, county unknown
The 1851 and 1861 census provide our only clues as to John Guthrie’s DOB, and they don’t match. The 1851 census lists him as 50 (born 1801) and the 1861 census as 70 (born 1791). Both census records indicate he was born in Ireland.
Trees listing a mother named Elizabeth are probably erroneous. The 1851 census lists an Elizabeth Guthrie with the family, but her age of 11 is underwritten as 8 so that the age appears to be 81 instead. This is John and Isabella’s daughter, Elizabeth Guthrie, and not his mother.
1804: BIRTH of ISABELLA STINSON
Ireland, county unknown
Isabella Stinson, the daughter of Richard & Mary Stinson, was born about 1804 in Ireland.
1812-1814: WAR of 1812
It is unknown if John Guthrie was living in Canada during the War of 1812, but the area in which he settled was a target of American assaults on British holdings. It is possible that John Guthrie was involved in the war if he lived there at the time, or that he may have arrived in Canada as a result of the war.

It is unknown exactly when John Guthrie moved from Ireland to Canada, or which port of entry he came by. He was living in York, Ontario by April of 1822 when he married Isabella Stinson

Their marriage notice was published in the British Canadian (Toronto) paper on 27 Mar 1847. “At Whitby, on 16th March, Noble Stevenson, to Mary Jane, daughter of John Guthrie, both of the twp of Whitby.” (Rev John Pentland). Their children were: Margaret Jane Stevenson, Sarah E Stevenson, Amelia Stevenson, Joseph Stevenson, Richard M Stevenson, Frances Gertrude Stevenson, John Wesley Stevenson, Minerva Stevenson, and Adelade Stevenson

Notice that daughter Margaret Guthrie is listed as single and living with her parents in 1851. This might indicate that her marriage to Thomas Lamb took place after 1851 and that she is not the mother of Thomas’s three children.
1852-1861: DEATH of ISABELLA (STINSON) GUTHRIE
