ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG6 – BRANCH E

Census records indicate that William Guthrie was born in Northumberland, England. This is not the first branch of Guthrie Family Group 6 with ties to Northumberland. GFG6 – Branch B’s Adam Guthrie b1740 also lived there. It could be that William descends from Adam’s line or that he shares a more recent common ancestor with Adam than with the rest of the group.

Robert Guthrie was born about 1826 in Bamburgh, Northumberland, England. During the 1851 Census, Robert was working as a groom for Richard Taylor, who was associated with the Bank of England stock proprietor and was a landed proprietor. His future wife Jane Wardbaugh was also working for the household as a house servant. In 1871 they were living in Elswick, Newgate, Northumberland where Robert worked as a provision dealer. I have not traced this family beyond the 1871 census.

Eleanor Guthrie was born abut 1830 in Bromborough, Northumberland, England. She was listed with the family during the 1851 census. No further details.

WILLIAM GUTHRIE

William Guthrie was born about 1831 in Belford, Northumberland, England. He was listed with his parents during the 1841 census in Bamburgh. Prior to his marriage he worked as a bread baker, and then as a contractor before becoming a Photographer. William married Margaret Fletcher in Newcastle Upon Tyne on 9 Oct 1852. He died 6 Nov 1885 of cancer of the tongue and neck, and is buried at St John’s Elswick Cemetery in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Margaret lived until 1915.

Thomas Guthrie was born about 1836 in Bamburgh, Northumberland, England. He was enumerated in the 1851 and 1861 censuses with his parents. Thomas died January 1870 at Newcastle upon Tyne. No further data.

John Guthrie was born about 1839 in Bamburgh. He was listed with the family in 1851 and 1861. No further details.

ANN ISABELLA GUTHRIE

Ann Isabella Guthrie aka Annabella was born about 1840 in Bamburgh. She was listed with her parents in 1841, 1851, and 1861. In July of 1865, she married Robert George Jackson, a mariner. Annabella was living with her parents in 1871, listed as a mariner’s wife.

In 1881, mariner’s wife Annie Jackson is listed at 5 Charlotte Street in Tynemouth with children John A Jackson and Mary A Jackson. The 1891 census lists Annie’s mariner husband as Absalom Jackson, so it could be the wrong family.

A DOD of April 1921 is listed for Ann Jackson in Alnwick, Volume 10B, p515.
