F: Benjamin Guthrie & Sarah Robinson

ORIGIN THEORIES for GUTHRIE FAMILY GROUP 6 – BRANCH F

Benjamin Guthrie 1820MD-1864VA & Sarah Robinson Saterfield
of Maryland and New Castle, Delaware

According to the 1850 US Census, Benjamin Guthrie was born in Maryland. This is contradicted by the 1860 US Census and his Civil War enlistment record, which both list his birthplace as Delaware.

Maryland has ties to several other Guthrie Family Groups: GFG1A, GFG2A, and GFG3A. There is no specific major foothold known to be associated with Guthrie Family Group 6 in colonial Maryland. The DelMarVA penninsula is an area that had long been settled by Scots and the Scot-Irish. Colonial Delaware is definitely a major settlement area for GFG6 – Branch K: Descendants of William Guthrie of Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware.

Benjamin Guthrie also lived in Mill Creek Hundred during the 1850 and 1860 census periods, so a connection to Branch K seems like a good bet.

Findings:

Our Y-DNA Project participant matches the genetic profile of Guthrie Family Group 6.

He has a Y67 marker test matching 66/67 with Group Mode DNA. His single genetic variance is found on YCAii – 22 instead of 23, a result unique to himself.

The closest genetic matches at 64/67 and 63/67 all belong to descendants of GFG6 – Branch K: Descendants of William Guthrie of Mill Creek Hundred. This genetic finding also supports the theory that Benjamin is also one of William’s descendants.

JOHN GUTHRIE
1839DE-1921PA

John Guthrie was born about January 1839 in Delaware. He was a resident of Mill Creek Hundred during his youth and worked as a cotton carder in a wool mill. He married Christiana Barr on 15 August 1862 at Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. They had 4 children born in Stanton, New Castle, Delaware who all appear to be outside the home at a young age. They boys are all working in separate locations, and daughter Annie appears to be at the Delaware Home for Friendless and Destitute Children suggesting that both parents may have died 1870-1880. This is not be the case, however, as there is a John Guthrie, 70, ‘border’ living in the home of Annie (Guthrie) Palmer in 1910. He is still living with them in 1920, and listed as the uncle to the HOH, Henry Palmer, which confirms the relationship.

There is a John Guthrie, 83, born c1838, died 9 Dec 1921, a veteran of the Civil War serving in the Army Co. A 4th Reg. Delaware Infantry, private, from 7 Aug 1862 to 16 Aug 1865 who is buried at Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Berks, PA.
