C: William Guthery & Elizabeth (MNU)

ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG7 – BRANCH C

William Guthery c1809VA-1866AR & Elizabeth Copeland
of Benton County, Arkansas, USA

It is probable that William Guthery is a descendant of GFG7 – Branch B – Daniel Guthrie and Jane (MNU), however the exact connection is not known at this time. Daniel’s family left Pennsylvania in the late 1790s and settled first in Virginia before moving on to Kentucky and finally to Indiana. Four of Daniel’s five sons moved to Indiana. The fifth, Samuel Guthrie, moved to Arkansas, making him the best candidate to be parent to both William and Thomas Guthrie.

Census records show that William Guthery was born in Virginia. His exact birth location is unknown. If the connection to Daniel and Samuel is true, then it might have been either Lee or Scott County in Virginia.

William is probably the brother of Thomas Guthery and John Guthry whose households are listed in the 1850 census of Ball, Benton County, Arkansas. The records show that Thomas and John were also born in Virginia. They were all farmers. Thomas and John eventually moved to Lamar County, Texas, but William and his family remained in Benton County, Arkansas.

Findings:

Kit 185946 is a Y67 marker test matching the genetic profile for Guthrie Family Group 7. Raw results match Group Mode DNA 65/67 or 66/67 depending on the assessment of DYS390.

DYS390 = 25 versus Group Mode 26. Also found in Kits 230119 (Branch A) and 641254 (Branch B). The value of 25 is probably the original group result for this marker since it also appears in Branches A and B. There are 3 other members of Branch B who show a value of 26, which likely reflects a genetic change at the generation of their most recent common ancestors.

DYS413a = 20 vs Group Mode 22. This result is unique to this kit.

CHILDREN:

SAMUEL GUTHERY
1835AR-Unknown

Benton County was not formed until 30 Sep 1836 from Washington County and is located in the NW corner of the state. Washington County, AR was formed from Lovely County, which was originally part of Indian Territory, on 17 Oct 1828.

Samuel Guthery was born about 1835 in Arkansas. He enlisted with the Union Army on 21 July 1862 at Benton as a Private in the First Cavalry. I did not find him in the 1870 census. No further data collected.

Naming the eldest son Samuel Guthery also fits the theory that William, Thomas, and John may be sons of Samuel Guthrie, and grandchildren of Daniel.

JOSEPH GUTHERY
1836AR-Unknown

Joseph Guthery was born about 1836 in Arkansas. He enlisted at the age of 24 in the Union Army, Company F, Arkansas 1st Cavalry on 21 July 1862. He was promoted to full sergeant, and mustered out on 16 April 1863 at Fayetteville, Arkansas. I do not find Joseph or Martha in the 1870 census. No further data collected.

JOHN GUTHERY
1837AR-Unknown

John Guthery was born in Arkansas about 1837. He was living with the family in 1860, but is not found in the 1870 census. He was an adult during the Civil War era, but no enlistment documents are found for Arkansas under his name. No further data collected.

MARY POLLY’ GUTHERY
1838AR-Unknown

William Guthery is credited with 3 daughters in various online trees: Polly, Nancy, and Elizabeth, but the census records are confusing and may contain one or more original and transcription errors. The names and ages don’t quite match up.

The 1840 census lists the Wm Guthery household with 3 females under 5 (born 1835-1840). This doesn’t match up with other records. One likelihood is that there is a second couple in the household, probably William’s older brother Thomas Guthery, wife and 2-3 young children.

The 1850 census lists Polly Guthry out of order by age. It appears that she is listed as 19 years old. If Polly is listed in the correct order, coming after John aged 13, her age might have been 12 (born about 1838) instead.

By 1860, the only daughter listed in the house is transcribed as Nancy, age 19, but the original scan actually shows ‘Mary’. The writer ads a curl to the end of his capital M, and his spelling of he name Nancy (found a few lines down) is quite different. Polly is a common nickname for Mary.

Conclusion: There is no daughter named Nancy. Mary and Polly are most likely the same person, and probably born about 1838 (later on listing a DOB closer to 1841). Mary/Polly is not listed with the family during the 1870 census, suggesting that she married or died between 1860-1870.

There is 1 marriage record for a Mary Guthrie (DOB est. 1841) in Benton County, Arkansas to Joseph Carter on 28 March 1861. William’s brother Thomas Guthrie also had a daughter named Mary Guthrie who was born about the same year as this woman, who is another candidate for this marriage, however descendants claim she was married to a different person.

GEORGE GUTHERY
1843AR-Unknown

George Guthrie was born about 1843 presumably in Benton County, Arkansas. He was 17 years old in 1860 and living with his parents and siblings. It is unknown if he was a Civil War soldier. He is not the George Guthrie who married Mary Beaty in Washington County, Arkansas in 1869. No further data collected.

ELIZABETH GUTHERY
1847AR-1859AR

Elizabeth Guthrie was born about 1847 presumably in Benton County, Arkansas. She reportedly died in Flint, Benton County, Arkansas in 1859. No details. No further data collected.

WILLIAM ‘DANIEL’ GUTHERY
1849AR-1880AR

William Daniel Guthery aka Daniel was born about 1848 in Benton County, Arkansas. He was enumerated with his parents and siblings in the censuses of 1850, 1860, and 1870 in Benton County, Arkansas. Occupation: Farmer. Daniel married Delia Snodgrass on 27 August 1871. They had 2 daughters and 1 son prior to his death in February of 1880. The mortality index indicates his COD was an erysipelas infection.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

About 1806: BIRTH of THOMAS GUTTERY
Virginia, USA

Thomas Guttery is a probable brother to William Guthery. They lived next door to each other in Benton County, Arkansas, their ages being only 3 years apart, and both born in Virginia.

About 1809: BIRTH of WILLIAM GUTHERY
Virginia, USA

Census records show that William Guthery was born in Virginia about 1809. Since the DNA profile matches GFG7, and we know that Branch B’s Daniel Guthrie was living in Virginia in the early 1800s along with his children, it is quite possible that Thomas, John, and William are his grandchildren.

According to the family history, Daniel Guthrie’s family lived in Lee County, Virginia prior to moving to Kentucky at the bequest of Daniel Boone, and some of then on to Indiana. Daniel’s son, Hugh, Daniel, William, and John all went to Indiana. Daniel’s son Samuel Guthrie 1775-1844 and his wife Judith Carter, moved from Scott County, Virginia to Washington County, Arkansas. Their 4 known sons were born between 1801-1807, about the same age range as William and Thomas.

Prior to its 1836 formation, Benton County was part of Washington County, so their location within Arkansas also makes sense. Research is required to confirm this theory.

About 1812: BIRTH of JOHN GUTHERY
Virginia, USA

John Guthery is a probable brother to William and Thomas, above. He was born in Virginia, also a farmer, and living only a few households away from both men, who were neighbors, in Ball, Benton, Arkansas in 1850.

About 1834: MARRIAGE of WILLIAM GUTHRIE
Washington County, Arkansas, USA, presumably

Online trees list two different surnames for William’s wife Elizabeth: Copeland and Reed. I have not found confirmatory records for either name, but the 1850 census lists 2 Copeland households on the page prior to the entries for Thomas and William, and on the same page as the entry for John Guthry. Alexander Copeland is also a documented on William’s estate administration.

About 1835: MARRIAGE of THOMAS GUTHRIE
Washington County, Arkansas, USA, presumably

Thomas Guthrie married Zilpha Mogelin about 1835 presumably prior to the birth of their eldest known child in 1836. They had 4 children: Elvira (1836), William (1839), a son who died in infancy (1840), and Mary J (1841). Sometime between 1850-1860, Thomas moved his family to Parker County, Texas. They settled in Lamar County, Texas by 1869 and remained there. His wife Zipha died about 1870-1880. Thomas died on 5 March 1881

About 1835: BIRTH of SON – SAMUEL GUTHRIE

1836: FORMATION of BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS
Washington County, Arkansas on 30 September 1836

Benton County was formed from Washington County and is located in the northwest corner of Arkansas on the Ozark plateau. It adjoins Oklahoma to the west and Missouri to the north.

About 1838: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARY ‘POLLY’ GUTHRIE
Benton County, Arkansas, USA, presumably

1840: US CENSUS of ARKANSAS
Ball, Benton County, Arkansas, USA

Even though Thomas was older, it seems that William probably had his household set up first. This is another indicator that he married prior to his brother. In the 1840 census, William Guthery is listed as the Head of Household rather than the older Thomas Guttery.

Wm Guthery Household:
1M 30-39 (1801-1810)
1M & 2 F 20-29 (1811-1820)
4M & 3F Under 5
1 M Slave 24-35 (1805-1816)
Persons Employed in Agriculture: 2
Total Free White Persons: 1
Total Slaves: 2
Total All Persons: 12

This line of Guthrie men were slave owners. Looking at Chancery Court documents for Samuel Guthrie, their prospective father, he may have inherited a slave or slaves from his wife’s side of the family.
