ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG9 – BRANCH B
The majority of information about John Guthrie and his wife Bridget Healy comes from her Civil War Widow’s Pension Application and from Census Records.
Both John Guthrie and Bridget Healy were born in Ireland in 1843. They were married in County Clare. They had 5 children: Patrick, John, Hanna, James, and Bridget Adelia. There is no mention of a daughter Susan who was born in Massachusetts in 1847 even though she is living with them in 1860. No relationship is given.
Verified birth and baptismal records for the children are included in the pension application file. One of the witnesses for daughter Hanna’s baptism was Thos. Guthrie, most likely a relative of John’s.
Unlike most of our protestant Guthrie immigrant families these folks were of the Roman Catholic faith.
John was a Civil War Union soldier in Company F 165th NY Infantry who went Missing in Action in Louisiana, and was presumed to be captured and died, or Killed in Action. See Widow’s Pension 112966 at Fold3.

SUSAN GUTHRIE
1847MA-1899NY
Susan Guthrie is listed with the family in the 1860 NY census as a 13 year old. She is inferred to be John and Bridget’s daughter. Susan is not listed in her mother’s Widow’s Pension application as she was already over the age of 16 and therefore ineligible for inclusion in the pension.
Based on the presence of John Clancy, aged 10, whose mother was born in MA, living with Bridget Guthrie in 1880, I believe that Susan Guthrie married a Clancy. The 1865 NY State Census of Brooklyn, Kings, NY lists a John Clancy, 27, and Susan Clancy, 17 (born about 1848) that is a likely possibility for this daughter.

1843-1851: AMERICAN IMMIGRATION
We don’t know exactly when John & Bridget Guthrie arrived in America, but it would be sometime after their 1843 marriage in Ireland and the 1847 birth of their daughter Susan Guthrie’s in Massachusetts. The location of her birth suggests that they arrived at the port of Boston prior to moving to New York City.
1847: BIRTH of SUSAN GUTHRIE
Massachusetts, USA
Susan Guthrie, 13, is listed with John and Bridget’s family in New York in 1860. There are no relationships given on this census, but she is listed in order right along with the other children later documented to be Bridget’s children. The Widow’s Pension application indicates only 5 children, names them, and identifies their dates of birth and baptism. Susan is not included, but this is likely because she is already over the age of 16 at the time of the application.

Findings:
Kit N71610 is a transferred 12-marker Y-DNA test. We usually prefer a Y-37 test for matching purposes. He matches our GFG9 – Branch A participant on 11/12 markers. This match to GFG9 is not 100% certain, especially as there is no known historical connection between the two lines. He has 19 matches with men of the Green surname and 4 of the Padgett surname, which are the primary surnames appearing for the participant from GFG9-Branch A. However, he has 41 matches at the Y12 level to men of the Guthrie surname, but due to the minimal number of markers, he matches multiple unrelated groups. Probably more of a match to ancient relationships rather than genealogical ones. This kit needs an upgrade to Y37 or Y67 markers, and we need more descendants of both Branch A and Branch B to compare.
