ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG1A BRANCH E
Until the revelation of the genetic connection to GFG1a, there were a number of potential Guthrie lineages that could have been claimed as John Guthrie’s family simply because they lived in the same regions. The census records show different birth locations in either Alabama or Tennessee. This opened the list of likely candidates to a large number of options for research. The name John Guthrie doesn’t exactly stand out in any particular Guthrie group to narrow the choices down.
Thanks to the Direct Paternal Line Y-DNA test of one of our project participants, we now know that John Guthrie was a descendant of GFG1A. There are several branches of the tree including Branch A, which descends from the Guthries of Craigie, and is historically associated with the Guthries of Guthrie. John could potentially descend from any GFG1A branch or from an as-yet-unidentified link on a more distant part of the tree. Our participant’s DNA results provide us with some clues. The Autosomal DNA results show his closest Guthrie matches as being descendants of GFG1A-Branch B: John Guthrie & Elizabeth Baskett of Middlesex County, Virginia. Even more specifically, all but one of them descend from John & Elizabeth’s grandson Henry Guthrie and Penelope Johnson.
This suggests that Henry & Penelope could be the direct ancestors for John Guthrie (1821/2-1889). Some research is needed to determine any likely path back to this couple. The date of birth in 1821/2 suggests that John Guthrie would be a grandson to the couple if he does fit into that line.
The Y-DNA is the same 37/37 marker match with other descendants of GFG1A-Branch B who descend from Henry’s brother, Garritt Guthrie. To my knowledge, it is Garritt’s descendants who ended up in the AL/TN area rather than Henry’s, so this avenue should also be explored.

MARY GUTHRIE
c1846AR-????
Mary appears to be the eldest child of John & Nancy Guthrie. She is listed with them in the census records for 1850 and 1860 in Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA. I cannot find the family during the 1870 census period. She is not listed with her widowed father and youngest siblings in the 1880 census of Cove Creek, Washington, Arkansas.
Did Mary marry? The most likely possibility is the marriage of Mary E Guthery to John L Griffin in Benton, Arkansas on 13 Feb 1876. The marriage index lists Mary’s DOB about 1847. Washington County neighbors Benton County in the far NW corner of the state.
This is an interesting find because we have several descendant of Dora Griffin who married John Thomas Babb in the Guthrie DNA Project. They have identified Dora’s mother as Mary Elizabeth Guthrie / Reed whose mother Mariah (Williamson) Guthrie had remarried a Reed. Mariah’s Guthrie husband’s identity remains unknown. This family was living in Flint and Hico, Benton, Arkansas, USA. A delayed Arkansas Birth Certificate for Dora Griffin of Siloam Springs, Benton, AR, lists her parents as John L Griffin and Mary E Guthery, with 3 children born to the mother at the time of the birth of Dora. Mrs Mary Griffin, the parent or nearest older relative, signed the certificate on 23 Apr 1942 stating that she was present at the birth on 1 Oct 1881 or knew the facts stated within the certificate.
It sounds like this is a case requiring some more evidence. Does anyone have some facts for us?

MALISSA GUTHRIE
1848AR-a.1860
Born about 1848/9 in Malissa Guthrie was listed with her parents and older sister Mary in the 1850 census of Mountain, Washington, Arkansas. She is not listed in the 1860 census, which suggests that she died young. No death record found.

JAMES GUTHRIE
c1852AR-bet.1860-78AR
Son James likely died as a child. He was born about 1852 in Washington County, Arkansas, and was listed in the 1860 census with the family. I have not found the family in the 1870 census. The 1880 census lists a son by the name of James Guthrie, but he is the youngest in the family at only 2 years of age, which would seem to indicate that this James died young, and another son was named in his stead.

JOHN GUTHRIE
c1855AR-????
Like his oldest sister Mary Guthrie there does not appear to be a document linking John Guthrie to his parents after the 1860 census when he was only 5 years of age. The family seems to be absent (or very well hidden from searches) during the 1870 census, and so there is a large gap between the child John Guthrie was in 1860 and the man whom he potentially grew up to be.
Information on John Guthrie after the 1860 census should be considered to be a presumptive relationship unless any documentation or DNA tests confirm the family ties. Sticking close to home in 1870, there is a 17 year old working as a common laborer in Mississippi, Sebastian, Arkansas for James & Nancy Matthews. Sebastian County is south of Washington and Benton Counties on the state line. Not so far as to be an unlikely match, but there is another John Guthrie as a candidate for that record.
Online trees are a bit muddled after that seeming to mix and match this John Guthrie with John Alexander Guthrie who m1 Emely Emanda Sneed and m2 Lavina Elizabeth Daily. The second man was a son of James Guthrie and Elvira Randolph, and grandson of Carter Guthrie and Barbara Beal. He is the man who died in Washington, AR 23 Mar 1924.

ELISHA GUTHRIE
1857AR-1926OK
Elisha Guthrie was born on 7 June 1857 in Washington County, Arkansas, USA as the 5th of 8 known children born to John & Nancy Mahala (MNU) Guthrie. He is enumerated in the 1860 census with the family in Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA. Even though we don’t have the 1870 census for the family, Elisha is still living in the same location in Mountain, Washington, Arkansas in 1880 after his 4 Sep 1879 marriage to Tennessee Ann Walker, the daughter of Josiah Thomas ‘TJ’ Walker and Mary Ann Billingsly. Elisha and Tinnie were parents to William Hosea (1880), Nilea (1885), Effie Lee (1887), Emma (1890), Sarah Elizabeth (1893), and Robert Elisha (1896). The family moved from Arkansas to Cherokee County, Oklahoma between 1910 and 1920. Elisha Guthrie died in Tahlequah, Cherokee, OK on 23 March 1926 at the age of 68 after a lingering illness.

SARAH F GUTHRIE
c1860AR-????
Sarah F Guthrie is listed as a single woman of 20 years of age in 1880 and living at home with her widowed father, John Guthrie, and her two youngest siblings, Joseph H, 7, and James, 2. Since she is not listed with the family in the 1860 census, it is probable that her mother was pregnant at the time of the census and that Sarah’s birth was in the second half of 1860 or early in 1861.
A search for marriages in Washington County, Arkansas resulted with a marriage between Sarah Guthrie and Columbus Wilburn on 15 Jun 1885. The marriage document lists her as 24 years of age (DOB abt 1861), which fits the right age bracket. Both she and Columbus were living in Strickler, Washington, Arkansas at the time of her marriage.
The only Arkansas documents I can find for Columbus Wilburn are a prior marriage in 1872 Conway, AR to Marina Plunkett and a 1881 Fort Smith Criminal Case file that charges a Columbus W Wilburn with larceny for stealing a cow.

JOSEPH HENRY HARRISON GUTHRIE
c1863/73AR-1945CA
Here’s another mix and match dilemma. There are two men named Joseph H. Guthrie born in Arkansas. This one born about 1873 whose father is John Guthrie (born AL or TN) living in Washington County, AR, and the other born about 1866 whose father is Fielding Guthrie (born in AR to parents from SC) living in Pope County, AR. Census records in Arkansas appear to belong to only one of these men. A couple of online trees link those census records, marriage record and descendants to the Joseph ‘Joe’ H Guthrie who Fielding’s son. Yet the location data suggests that they belong to the son of John Guthrie in Washington County, AR. His family is found living next door to Elisha Guthrie’s family at one point.
In 1880, Joseph H Guthery is listed as 7. His father John’s birthplace is listed as TN. Residence: Washington, AR.
In 1880, Joseph H Guthrie is listed as 15. His father Fielding’s birthplace is listed as AR. Residence: Pope, AR.
In 1885 Joseph Gutherie of Strickler, Washington, AR, 22, married Annie Wood, 15.
Note that Joseph was living in Strickler, which is the same location as John & Nancy’s daughter Sarah was living assuming that she is the same woman who married Columbus W Wilburn in 1885. Same year, same location.
In 1900, we find Joseph H Guthrie, 38, listed as the head of household in Lees Creek, Washington, AR. His father is listed as being born in TN. Wife is Annie S, 29. Children: Ednie M 14, Henry H 11, Richard C 9, John V 5, Jewel G 3.
In 1910, Joseph H Guthrie, 50, and his wife Anne, 39 are living in Cove Creek, Washington, AR, which is the home of John & Nancy Mahala Guthrie. Strickler is an unincorporated community located within the Township of Cove Creek. On 29 December 1945 in Orange County, California, where some of his children had settled, John Guthrie died. The California Death Record Index lists his full name as Joseph Harrison Guthrie, his DOB as 7 Mar 1861 in Arkansas, and his DOD as 29 Dec 1945 in Orange. Father’s surname: Guthrie.
The grave marker pictured at Find-a-Grave lists his DOB as 7 Nov 1863 and DOD as 29 Dec 1945. He is buried at Fall Creek Cemetery in Strickler, Washington, Arkansas. His wife Sarah Ann (Wood) Guthrie and several children are also buried there.
The Delayed Birth Certificate for daughter Jewel Guthrie lists her parents as Joseph Henry Guthrie and Sarah Ann Wood making it likely that Joseph’s name was actually Joseph Henry Harrison Guthrie.

JAMES P GUTHRIE
c1878AR-19??
James P Guthrie, the youngest of the family, was born about 1878 in Washington County, Arkansas. He was listed in Cove Creek with his widowed father, John, sister Sarah, and brother Joseph during the 1880 census. On 21 June 1900, the census of Prairie Grove, Washington, Arkansas finds him a single man of 21 working as a farm laborer for Josiah and Caroline Thompson.
Just a few months later on 15 November 1900, James P Guthrie married Annie Lee McKee. Their marriage was a short one as Annie died 16 September 1901. She is buried in Fall Creek Cemetery in Strickler, Washington, Arkansas. James does not appear to be buried there.
He may have left Arkansas after the death of his young wife. I don’t find him listed there during the 1910 census. There is a James P Guthrie born about 1879 Arkansas living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with wife Maud M Guthrie, daughter Lillian Guthrie 3, and son Floyd J Guthrie 1, but his father’s birth location is listed as SC. The same family is still in OK in 1920. Not certain if this is the same man.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
1819: TERRITORY of ARKANSAS
The region was initially organized as an incorporated territory on 4 July 1819 as the Territory of Arkansaw, and later admitted to the Union as the State of Arkansas in 1836. Fort Smith served as the legal authority overseeing the Indian Territory and dealings with the Indian Nations. (See Cherokee Treaty of 1817) [Wikipedia]
c1821: BIRTH of JOHN GUTHRIE (PARENTS UNIDENTIFIED)
Alabama or Tennessee, USA
The 1850 Census lists “John Guthery” with a birth location of Alabama.
The earliest Federal Census for Alabama was in 1830 with the following households:
1) William Guthrie of Jackson, Alabama. No males in the 5-9 or 10-14 categories
2) Saml R Guthrie of Jefferson, Alabama. Includes 1 male 5-9. [Samuel R Guthrie & Margaret J Mathers – Ungrouped]
3) John F Guthrie of Jackson, Alabama. [Ruled out. John Franklin Guthrie & Mary Swoap – GFG11]
4) Johnson Guthrie of Walker, Alabama [Ruled Out. GFG2A-Branch K. Johnson Guthrie & Mary Wilson]

10) Rob Gutry of Franklin, Alabama – [Ruled out. No children.]
The 1860 and 1880 Census Records as well as other documents list John Guthrie’s birth location as Tennessee.
The earliest Federal census for Tennessee was in 1820. John might not have been born yet, but there’s a good chance that his parents were already living there if TN is the right location.
1) George Guthrey of Overton, TN [Ruled out. GFG11]
2) Henry Guthrey of Davidson, TN [Ruled out. GFG5]
3) James Guthrie of Lebanon, Wilson, TN
4) Dudley Guthrie of Franklin, TN [Dudley Guthrie & Delilah Owen. They had a son named John born c1835.]

16) William Gutrey of Bedford, TN
c1829: BIRTH of NANCY MAHALA (MNU)
Missouri, USA
Both the 1850 and 1860 census records list John Guthrie’s wife as being born in Missouri. They also list his wife under two different given names. This is not that unusual. The 1850 census clearly lists her as Nancy, a 21 year old female, while the 1860 census lists her as Mahala, 29.
The 1850 census of Mountain, Washington, Arkansas lists 47 people, including Nancy Guthery, who were born in Missouri. Perhaps one of those households includes her parents.
1830: US FEDERAL CENSUS of ARKANSAS
We’re not certain exactly when John Guthrie came to Arkansas except that it was between 1821-1850.
There are 4 Households:
1) Samuel Gutry of Washington, Arkansas: [Ruled out. GFG7. Samuel Guthrie & Judith Carter]
2) John Guthery of Prairie, Arkansas: [John is the only person in the household, age 20-29.]
3) Francis Guthery of Prairie, Arkansas [1M 60-69, 1F50-59, 1M20-29, 1F15-19]
4) John L Guthrie of Monroe, Arkansas [John is the only person in the household, age 20-29.]
1836: ARKANSAS STATEHOOD
15 Jun 1836
1840: US FEDERAL CENSUS of ARKANSAS
This is 6 years before the birth of his eldest daughter Mary E Guthrie, which reportedly took place in Arkansas.
1) Wm Guthery of Ball, Benton, AR [Ruled out. GFG7]
2) Lawson Guttery of Cedar Creek, Madison, AR [Ungrouped. Son of Carter Guthrie & Babara Beal]
3) Saml Guthrie of White, AR [Ungrouped. Judge Samuel Guthrie & Mariah Jerrett, son of Frederick Guthrie and Mollie Louallen.]
4) Joseph Guthrie of White, AR [Ungrouped. Joseph Guthrie & Susannah Wood, son of Frederick Guthrie and Mollie Louallen.]
4) Edmund Guthrie of White, AR [Ungrouped. Edmund Matthew Guthrie & Harriet Newman. Ruled out. Went to TX.]
5) E W Guthrie of White, AR [Ungrouped. Ephraim W Guthrie & Sinia Covey, son of F&M. Ruled out. Went to TX.]
6) J Guthry of Ball, Benton, AR. [Probably GFG7]
7) Thos Guthery of Prairie, Washington, AR [1M30-39, 1F20-29, 2M and 1F under 5]
8) Nelson Guttrey of Prairie, Madison, AR [Ungrouped. Nelson Guthrie & Emily Paine, son of Carter & Barbara.]
9) Carter Guttry of Cedar Creek, Madison, AR [Ungrouped. Carter Guthrie & Barbara Beal. 1M60-69, 1F50-59, 1M20-29, 1M15-19.]
10) John Guttry of Cedar Creek, Madison, AR [Ungrouped. John Guthrie & Susannah Whitfield, son of C&B.]
11) Luke Guttry of Cedar Creek, Madison, AR [ Ungrouped.]
Since John Guthrie was of working age by 1840, it is also possible that he was enumerated in the household where he was employed if that was not at home.
c1845: MARRIAGE of JOHN GUTHRIE & NANCY MAHALA (MNU)
Washington County, Arkansas (Presumably)
Since John Guthrie was from AL or TN and Nancy Mahala from Missouri, it is most likely that they met and married in Washington County, Arkansas where their families had settled. John was 24 in 1845 and Nancy Mahala only 16. This is an approximate DOM as their eldest known child, Mary E, was born about 1846.
c1846: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARY GUTHRIE
Arkansas, probably Washington County
The 1850 census lists her birth location as Arkansas. This is one of the children whose future is a little muddled. She was alive in 1860 at 13 years of age and likely past the majority of childhood illnesses. Did she marry John L Griffin in 1876 or was his wife Mary Elizabeth Guthrie (later Reed, her stepfather’s surname)?
c1849: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MALISSA GUTHRIE
Arkansas, probably Washington County
Malissa Guthrie was listed as 1 year old during the 1850 census of Mountain, Washington, which was assessed on 25 November 1850. Her birth was likely in mid to late 1849.

THE GUTHERY HOUSHOLD
John Guthery 29, male, Farmer, born in Alabama
Nancy Guthery 21, female, born in Missouri
Mary Guthery 4, female, born in Arkansas
Malissa Guthery 1, female born in Arkansas
Communities enumerated in Mountain Township were: Brush Creek, Cane Hill, Clear Creek, Cove Creek, Fayetteville, Illinois, Marrs Hill, Mountain, Prairie, Richland, Vineyard, West Fork, White River.
1851-1860: DEATH of DAUGHTER – MALISSA GUTHRIE
Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA
Malissa Guthrie’s death is presumed to have occurred between 1851-1860. She is not listed on the 1860 census with the family when she would have only been 11 years of age. It is likely that she died of a childhood illness or accident.
c1852: BIRTH of SON – JAMES GUTHRIE
Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA
James Guthrie was listed as 8 years old during the 1860 census. The family is missing during the key 1870 census year, which would reveal whether or not this boy died young or if there is some age discrepancy going on as there appears to be another James (age 2 in 1880) in the family later on.
c1855: BIRTH of SON – JOHN GUTHRIE
Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA
John Guthrie was listed as 5 years old by June of 1860. Due to the family’s disappearance during the 1870 census, it is uncertain whether this boy died young or if he survived to manhood. He is not listed in the 1880 census with his widowed father and siblings.
1857: BIRTH of SON – ELISHA GUTHRIE
7 June 1857, Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA
Elisha Guthrie, who is the ancestor of our first Y-DNA Project Participant representing John & Nancy’s descendants, was born in 1857. He was 3 years old during the 1860 census when the family was living in Mountain Township.
1860: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SARAH F GUTHRIE
May 1860, Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA
Sarah Guthrie was only one month old when the family census was taken on 13 June 1860 revealing that her birth month would have been in May 1860. Her middle initial ‘F’ is listed on the 1880 census. Sarah is likely to have been the oldest surviving daughter of the household and upon her mother’s death in 1878-1880 assumed her housekeeping duties.

Mahala Guthery 29, female, born in Missouri
Mary Guthery 13, female, born in Arkansas, attended school within the year
James Guthery 8, male, born in Arkansas, attended school within the year
John Guthery 5, male, born in Arkansas
Elisha Guthery 3, male born in Arkansas
Sarah Guthrie 1/12, female born in Arkansas [Birth in May 1860]
Communities enumerated in Mountain Township were: Brush Creek, Cane Hill, Clear Creek, Cove Creek, Elm Springs, Fayetteville, Illinois, Marrs Hill, Mountain, Prairie, Richland, Vineyard, West Fork, White River.
1863: BIRTH of SON – JOSEPH H GUTHRIE
7 November 1863, Washington County, Arkansas, USA
There are discrepancies about Joseph’s DOB and therefore his link to these parents remains in question. However, the residences and even burial location appear to make sense.
The first time Joseph H Guthrie’s nape appears is the 1880 census when he is listed out of order on the family census and his age is documented as 7 (est. DOB of 1873).
1870: US FEDERAL CENSUS of ARKANSAS
Mountain, Washington, Arkansas, USA
The Guthrie/Guthery family is not listed in the 1870 census of Mountain Township. There are 24 census pages for the township and they are not on the list of families. Perhaps they were all off visiting family back in AL/TN or MO, or simply left off the census for some reason. I cannot find them listed anywhere else.
c1878: BIRTH of SON – JAMES P GUTHRIE
Washington County, Arkansas, USA
James Guthrie is listed as 2 years of age in 1880 when his widowed father and siblings are listed in the Cove Creek census for Washington County, Arkansas.
1878-1880: DEATH of WIFE – NANCY MAHALA (MNU) GUTHRIE
Washington County, Arkansas, USA (Presumably)
By 1880, John Guthrie is documented as a widower. The last known child of the family is documented as being 2 years of age at that time suggesting that Nancy Mahala died sometime between 1878-1880. Technically, her last documented appearance was the 1860 census, so it is entirely possible that she died at or after Sarah’s birth in 1860 and that John remarried some unknown woman who also died prior to 1880. If that happened, we do not have any evidence of it, so for now the two youngest members of the family, Joseph and James, will be listed as Nancy Mahala’s sons.

There are 2-3 errors here.
1) James’s father’s birthplace should be listed as TN rather than AR.
2) Joseph is listed out of order by age
3) Joseph is listed as 7 instead of his possible age of 17 based on his probable identity and other records.
1885: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – SARAH F GUTHRIE
15 June 1885, Washington County, Arkansas, USA
A marriage between Sarah Guthrie, 24, and Columbus Wilburn, 39, both living in Strickler, Washington, Arkansas, occurred on 15 June 1885. They were married by R.M. Wood, MG. The marriage certificate was filed on 4 Sept 1885.

This is the last official record I could find for Sarah. Columbus Willburn may have been previously married to a Manica Plunkett in Conway, AR 20 Oct 1872. There is also a Fort Smith, AR US Criminal Case in 1881 where he was accused of larceny in the theft of a cow.

1945: DEATH of SON – JOSEPH H GUTHRIE
29 Dec 1945, Orange County, California, USA
Children Clint and Jewel and their families were living in Los Angeles. It may be that Joseph Guthrie was visiting them for the Christmas holidays at the time of his death on 29 December 1945. I don’t see a document that indicates he was living there. Joseph was buried back in Fall Creek Cemetery in Strickler, Washington, Arkansas. His wife Sarah Ann (Woods) Guthrie predeceased him on 7 December 1939 and she is also buried there.
