CENSUS RECORDS: 1820 – 1840

1820 CENSUS – 6 results in Halifax
Mary Twp, Halifax
John Guthrey:
2M 26-44, 5M 16-25, 3M 10-15 +9 slaves, manufacturing.
Identity: ?
This household should probably be that of John Guthrey sr who m. Betty Ann Allen, the father of John Guthrey Jr in Meadsville, below. But he was in his 60s in 1820, and there is no one in that age category in this household. Was that an oversight? Was he just not there? There are so many adult and teen males in this household. This has to be a multigenerational household, but even so, where are the females?

Marseilles, Halifax
Thomas Guthrey:
1M/1F 26-44, 1M/1F under 10, no slaves, agriculture
Identity: Thomas Guthrie 1790VA-1850+ and Frances Ann Gravitt
Parents: Presumed son of Cason Guthrie and Dorthy Reaves who m. 7 Jun 1786 in Halifax. Children of this marriage born 1786-1800. Thomas would be 20-34. If he is the same Thomas Guthrey living in the Southern District of Halifax in 1850, his birth year would be about 1790.
Note that a Thomas Guthrey is consistently listed as a HOH in the same area in 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850. Since he m. Frances Ann Gravitt 16 Jun 1814 in Person, NC (right over the VA-NC border) chis children are most likely born 1815+ and in this census would be no older than 5 years of age.
Combined census assessment suggests:
1 son b. 1816-1820
1 daughter b. 1816-1820
1 son b. 1821-1825 (who may or may not be son James A Guthrey b. about 1825-1826)

Meadsville, Halifax
Ephraim Guthrey:
1M/1F 26-44, 3F/1M under 10, no slaves, agriculture (image 26/27)
Identity: Ephraim Guthrie 1794VA-1880+ and Nancy Blackwell
Parents: Presumed son of Cason Guthrie and Dorothy Reaves who m. 7 Jun 1786 in Halifax. Children of this marriage born 1786-1800. Ephraim would be 20-34. Ephraim is listed in the South District of Halifax in 1820, 1830, 1840, (where in 1850?), and 1860. Then specifically in Mount Carmel in 1870 and 1880. The later census records list his birth year as 1790 or 1794. He married Nancy Blackwell, but there is an inconsistency with their DOM. Transcriptions of VA Select Marriage records lists it as 18 Dec 1809. This would make him only 15 if born in 1794. His military pension records list the date as 15 Dec 1811. Either way, he would be expected to establish his own household by the 1820 census, and does. All children in the 1820 census are under 10 years of age, so the 1811 DOM may be more accurate.
Combined census assessment suggests:
3 daughters b. 1811-1815
1 son b. 1816-1820
1 son b. 1826-1830

Due to the missing (not found by me) 1850 census we can’t determine the full family numbers.

John Guthrey Jr:
1M 26-44, 1F 16-25, 2M under 10, no slaves, 1agriculture
Identity: GFG4’s John Guthrey Jr son of John Guthrey Sr and Betty Ann Allen

John Guthrey Sr was born in Cumberland County, VA about 1759 and married there in 1785. He is believed to be the Virginia militia man who is noted on The Pension Roll of 1835 as living in Halifax, VA, aged 17, born about 1757. See also Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application files. John Guthrey Sr died in Halifax, VA about 1833 or 1836.

George Guthridge FN (Free Negro/Colored): 1M 26-44, 1F 14-25, 1M/1F under 14

1830 CENSUS – 18 records

Richard A Guthry [img 59 of 202]
1M/1F 20-29, 1F 5-9, 1F under 5; Slaves: 1M 36-54, 1F under 10
Identity:  GFG4B – Richard A Guthrie / Martha ‘Patsy’ Yeates (m. 1828 Halifax)
Parents: GFG4A – John Guthrey and Betty Ann Allen (with Genetic Mismatch)
This family moved to Hardin KY by 1840 census.

Nancy L Guthry [img 59 of 202]
1F 40-49, 1M/1F 20-29, 2F 15-19, 1M10-14
Identity: Nancy S Davis widow of William T Guthrey (d. 1819) (m. 1805 Halifax)
Parents: GFG4A – William T Guthrey is a son of Travis Guthrey and Mary Ann Hill, and grandson of Thomas Guthrey and Sarah Oakes.

Allen Guthry [img 59 of 202]
1M/1F 40-49, 1M 15-19, 1F 10-14, 2F 5-9, 1M/2F under 5; Slaves 1M 36-54, 1M/1F 10-23, 1M/2F under 10
Identity: GFG4A – Allen Guthrey / Mary M Bostick (m.1812 Halifax)
They remained in Halifax, VA. His death bet. 1850-60. Her death in 1865.

Samuel Guthry [img 59/202]
1M/1F 30-39, 1M 10-14, 1M/2F 5-9, 1F under 5
Identity: Not Yet Determined. This census is by alphabetical grouping rather than by place of residence, but he is listed between Allen Guthrey and John Guthrey Jr.

John Guthry Junior [img 59 of 202]
1M 40-49, 1F 20-29, 2M 10-14, 1F 5-9, 1M under 5; Slaves: 1M/1F 36-54, 1M under 10
Identity: John Guthrey Jr
Parents: GFG4A – John Guthrey and Betty Ann Allen
He was born 1781-1790, and looks to have married a younger wife. They probably married about 1815-1819 based on the ages of the children.

With the exception of the wife’s younger age bracket, this definitely looks to be the son of John Guthrey and Betty Ann Allen, especially because they were known slave holders. John and Edna m. in 1816.

Mary Guthry [img59 of 202]
1F 50-59, 2F 20-29, 1M 15-19; Slaves: 1F 55-99, 1F 36-54, 1F 10-23, 2F under 10
Identity: Not Yet Confirmed, but how about this….
Mary’s birth year would have been about 1771-1780. This puts her in the right age category to be Mary ‘Polly’ Baskerville, the wife of Thomas Guthrey, son of Travis Guthrey and Mary Ann Hill, who died about 1837. This may be the date of the Chancery Court case rather than his actual DOD. If he died prior to 1830, this might be Thomas’ widow.

John Guthry [img 59 of 202]
1M 70-79, 1M/3F 20-29; Slaves: 1F 55-99, 2F 36-54, 1F 24-35, 2M/2F 10-23, 3M/3F under 10
Identity: John Guthrey Sr (Betty Ann Allen must be dec’d)
Born 1751-1760, so the age checks out. That 1820 census was either missing its females, or this indicates that the now adult sons may have married.

James Guthry [img 59 of 202]
1M/1F 40-49, 1M 15-19, 2M 10-14, 2M/1F 5-9. 2F under 5.
Identity: This is James Guthrey and Mary ‘Polly’ Hubbard (m.1810 Halifax)
Parents: GFG4 – Travis Guthrey and Mary Ann Hill
They have 4 sons and 3 daughters. All of the sons were born first, so this also fits the census.

Elijah Guthry [img 59 of 202]
1M 40-49, 1F 30-39, 1M/1F 5-9, 3M under 5; Slaves: 1F 10-23.
Identity: Elijah Guthrey and Jartney Vaughan (m. 1822 Halifax)
Parents: GFG4A – Travis Guthrey and Mary Ann Hill

Dennis Guthry [img59 of 202]
1M 40-49, 2F 20-29, 1M under 5
Identity: Dennis Guthry (per original image), but possibly Dennet Hill Guthry (m. Sarah ‘Sally’ Smallman Hart 1821 Halifax.)
Parents: GFG4A – Travis Guthrey and Mary Ann Hill

Richard B Guthry [img 59 of 202]
1M 30-39, 1F 20-29, 1F under 5; Slaves: 1F under 10
Identity: Richard B Guthrey (c1796VA-1860) and Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ W Hart (m. 1829 Halifax)
Parents: GFG4A – Thomas Guthrey and Mary ‘Polly’ Baskerville

Thomas Guthry [img 61 of 202]1M/1F 30-39, 1M/1F 10-14, 1M 5-9
Identity: Thomas Guthrie and Frances Ann Gravitt
Parents: GFG8A – Cason Guthrie and Dorthy Reaves

Ephraim Guthry [img 61 of 202]1M/1F 40-49, 3F 15-19, 1M 10-14, 1M under 5.
Identity: Ephraim Guthrie and Nancy Blackwell (m.1809 or 1811 Halifax)
Parents: GFG8A – Cason Guthrie and Dorthy Reaves

Cason Guthry [img 61 of 202]
1M 60-69, 1F 50-59, 1M/1F 30-39, 1M/3F 20-29
Identity: GFG8A – Cason Guthrie and 2nd wife Elizabeth Lee
Parents: GFG8A – Thomas Guthrie and Mary Cason

Letty Guthry [img 63 of 202]
1F 20-29, 1M 10-14, 1F 5-9, 2F under 5
Identity/Spouse: Unidentified
Letty would have been born about 1801-1810 with her eldest son being born about 1816-20, so her marriage to a Guthrie would have been about 1815-1819. The husband would have died 1826-1830 as they also have daughters under 5 years old.

John Guthry [img 63 of 202]
1M/1F 30-39, 2F 5-9, 1F under 5
Identity: John Guthrie (c1795 SCT – 1850+VA) and Mary New (m. 1821 Halifax)
Parents: Unidentified – K&Q County.
Although the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census list Virginia as his birthplace, two of his four daughters’ death certificates identify his birthplace as Scotland. The War of 1812 Pension records provide his testimony stating that he was born in King & Queen County, Virginia.
This couple married in 1821, so prior to that date he most likely did not have his own household. If he was in Halifax in 1820, who was he living with?
(No Y-DNA Test – This couple had only daughters)

Geo Gutridge [img 189 of 202]
1M 10-23 – Free Colored Person

1M/1F 24-35, 1F 10-23, 1M under 10 – all Free Persons of Color

Richard H Guthroy – North District [img 38 of 90]

Identity: Unknown
Parents: Unknown
Birth would have been 1801-1810. Marriage probable about 1820.
He and family are too young to be Richard B Guthrey, born abt. 1796, who is not listed in 1840 census, and too old to be Richard Adams Guthrie, born 1822 and married 1842.

William Guthrie – South District [img 27 of 92]
1M/1F 20-29, 2M under 5; Slaves: 1F 10-23

Lally Gathrie – South District [img 29 of 92]
1F 40-49, 1M10-14, 2M 5-9
Identity: Letty Guthrie (Remains Unidentified – Same from 1830 Census)
Spouse: Remains unidentified.
This is most likely Letitia Guthrey 51 from the South District 1850 census with daughter Ann 19.
Although it is probable that Letty was the spouse of a Guthrie, there is another possibility. She may have been an unmarried Guthrie with children. This is not unprecedented. Cason Guthrie and Mary Reeves family has a daughter Letty Guthrie attached of the correct age. Could she be this person, or could their Letty actually be a daughter-in-law rather than their daughter? Either scenario is also supported by the placement of Letty’s household in the South District near other children of Cason and Dorothy.

Thomas Guthrie – South District [img 33 of 92]
1M/1F 40-49, 2M 15-19; Slaves: 1M 55-99
